EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz will miss the rest of the season after having surgery on his left knee. Cruz had an arthroscopic debridement of the knee Thursday afternoon in Pensacola, Fla. after getting a second opinion on the injury he sustained last weekend against Seattle. The surgery is similar to the one former Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora had before the 2011 season. The recovery period is at least three weeks. The Giants (5-9) have two games left in the regular season. The team listed him as out for the Lions game in Detroit on Sunday and spokesman Pat Hanlon said he would not play in the season finale against Washington on Dec. 29 Cruz was injured Sunday in the third quarter of the Giants 23-0 loss to the Seahawks. He jumped to catch a pass and landed hard on his head. After he walked off the field, the Giants said he sustained a concussion and injured his knee. Cruz was cleared of the concussion Wednesday. The knee injury was more serious. Cruz, who signed a $43 million contract this summer, had a team-high 73 catches for 998 yards and four touchdowns this season. He was 2 yards short of his third straight 1,000-yard season. Offensive co-ordinator Kevin Gilbride said last week that this might have been Cruzs best season because the former free agent drew double-team coverage all season. He also noted that the Paterson native has also had his best year blocking. "Theres no question that we havent been as effective in some of the other spots and, therefore, people gear up defensively," Gilbride said. "Theyre certainly very cognizant of where he is at all times. Sometimes we call it funnel coverage, where everybody is man-to-man and then there is a zone player in there. Usually that zone player is looking to see where Victor is and then weve gotten a lot more doubles." Gilbride said it reminds him of the attention that Steve Smith and Plaxico Burress got in their primes. Signed as a free agent out of Massachusetts, Cruz catapulted into stardom in 2011, catching 82 passes for a team-record 1,536 yards and nine touchdowns. He became a fan favourite with his salsa dance after each touchdown. Cruz caught 86 passes for 1,092 yards and 10 touchdowns last season. He was selected to the Pro Bowl for the first time. If there has been any disappointment for Cruz the past two seasons, its been missing the playoffs. "I am about the team," Cruz said last week. "The numbers are great but I am about going to the playoffs and being in contention and doing things that get the team excited, the organization excited, the fans excited." MIAMI -- Jeff Baker hit a two-out RBI single to cap a four-run rally in the ninth inning by the Miami Marlins, who extended their winning streak to five games by beating the Washington Nationals 7-6. Miami trailed 6-1 in the seventh. Washingtons Rafael Soriano (2-1), who earned his 200th career save Sunday, took the mound in the ninth with a 6-3 lead and blew a save for the fourth time this season. Casey McGehee led off with a four-pitch walk, Garrett Jones doubled and Marcell Ozuna hit an RBI single. Jarrod Saltalamacchias sacrifice fly made it 6-5, and a wild pitch advanced Ozuna to second base. Adeiny Hechavarria ended an 11-pitch at-bat with an RBI triple to tie the game, and pinch-hitter Donovan Solano was hit by a pitch. Left-hander Jerry Blevins replaced Soriano and struck out Christian Yelich. Baker, who entered the game in the eighth inning, then lined a hit ovver left fielder Bryce Harper that hit the base of the fence.dddddddddddd The Marlins were coming off best seven-game trip in franchise history, a six-victory swing that put them back into the playoff picture, but it took them a while to get going in their home park. Jordan Zimmermann allowed two runs in seven innings and was in line for his first victory this month until Miamis comeback. A bad-hop grounder by Harper helped the Nationals score five runs in the sixth inning to take their big lead. Miami starter Nathan Eovaldi allowed six runs, five earned, in 5 1-3 innings. He has a 6.75 ERA in five starts this month. Mike Dunn (8-5) pitched a perfect ninth. Marlins cleanup hitter McGehee hit his 101st single -- most in the NL -- but that was their only baserunner in the first 4 2-3 innings. Jones had an RBI triple and scored for the Marlins in the seventh to start their comeback. ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Michigan coach John Beilein is willing to give Nik Stauskas a little leeway when it comes to shot selection. "Hes looking for a perfect play all the time, and shooters got to shoot it," Beilein said. "Sometimes whats a bad shot for others is a really good shot for him." Stauskas scored 21 of his 25 points in the second half Sunday, repeatedly making contested shots from the perimeter to help the 20th-ranked Wolverines to a 79-70 win over 13th-ranked Michigan State. Michigan rallied from an 11-point first-half deficit and wrested first place in the Big Ten from its in-state rival. "I just came out with the mindset in the second half that I wasnt going to be stopped," Stauskas said. "Once I made a couple shots, it kept going from there." Caris LeVert added 23 points for the Wolverines (19-7, 11-3), who won both regular-season meetings against Michigan State and six of the last eight games in the series. The Spartans (22-6, 11-4) started well, but were only up 36-34 at halftime. Then Stauskas and LeVert led a second-half charge. The Wolverines trailed 52-51 before going on a 13-0 run that sent the Crisler Center crowd into delirium. Michigan scored 45 points in the second half Sunday -- after blitzing the Spartans for 50 after halftime in an 80-75 win in East Lansing last month. "The first game, I was very proud of our effort. This game, we looked tired," Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said. "Im not very proud of our effort." Gary Harris scored 21 points for the Spartans. The victory gives Michigan a chance to earn its second Big Ten title in three years after tying for the championship in 2012. The Wolverines have home games against Minnesota and Indiana, as well as trips to Purdue and Illinois. Michigan State has home games against Illinois and Iowa followed by a trip to Ohio State. Stauskas was terrific in Michigans win at Michigan State last month, but he had not scored more than 16 points in a game since then. Perhaps he was letting opposing teams take him out of the offence too easily, but at 6-foot-6, if Stauskas makes up his mind that hes going to shoot, he usually can. With the Wolverines down 48-43, Stauskas scored seven straight points to give Michigan the lead. When the Spartans edged back ahead by one, Stauskas answered with a 3-pointer, and it soon become clear that there wasnt much Michigan State could do to keep him from shooting over defenders on the perimeter. A 3-pointer by Stauskas from the right wing put Michigan ahead 59-52, then LeVert added a 3-pointer and a dunk. With the Spartans wearing down, Jon Horford dunked for Michigan to make it 68-56 -- and that ended a stretch of 23 straight Michigan points by Stauskas or LeVert. Michigan fans serenaded the Spartans with a chant of "little brother" toward the end. The Spartans have battled injuries throughout this season -- Adreian Payne and Brandon Dawson missed the first meeting with Michigan. Dawson was still out Sunday with his broken hand, but Payne is back, and he had 12 points and 11 rebounds. Keith Appling, who has been dealing with a wrist problem, scored only six points for Michigan State. "Yeah, I fell on the wrist again, but I couldnt come out of the game," Appling said. "Its very frustrating right now, because there are things I just cant do, but I cant let that be an excuse. Im the quarterback of this team, like coach always says, and I have to be out there leading." Michigan, of course, has been playing without big man Mitch McGary for over two months, but the Wolverines have overcome his back-related absence thus far. Glenn Robinson III scored 15 points Sunday, including an alley-oop dunk from a driving Stauskas that made it 72-61. Michigan State made 17 shots from 3-point range in its previous game against Purdue, and the Spartans were locked in early in this one. Payne dunked on freshman Zak Irvin while drawing a foul, and the three-point play gave Michigan State a 22-11 lead. The Wolverines responded with a 10-0 run that included 3-pointers by Spike Albrecht and LeVert and a breakaway dunk by Irvin. LeVert scored 14 points in the first half, and his 3-pointer in the final seconds cut Michigan States lead to two. cheap nfl jerseys black friday . SAN FRANCISCO -- San Francisco 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver is continuing his outreach to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community more than a year after his anti-gay remarks leading up to the Super Bowl. The San Francisco Bay Times announced Thursday that Culliver conducted his first interview with an LGBT media outlet, sharing how he changed his thinking. Culliver, who missed the 2013 season because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee sustained during training camp, underwent sensitivity training and began doing other outreach work. Culliver has worked with "The Trevor Project," an organization that provides crisis and suicide intervention to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth. "I truly appreciate the staff at the Trevor Project for allowing me to grow and educating me on the issues affecting the LGBTQ community," Culliver said Thursday in a statement to The Associated Press. "I have learned so much and made some really great friends. I will continue my commitment to the organization and to their youths and stand firm with hope that one day that all individuals regardless of sex, race, or creed will be treated with dignity and respect from all." During Super Bowl media day in 2013 at the Superdome in New Orleans, Culliver responded to questions from comedian Artie Lange by saying he wouldnt welcome a gay player in the locker room. He also said the 49ers didnt have any homosexual players and, if they did, those players should leave. He later apologized, facing a large group of Super Bowl media members for nearly an hour. "Chris has grown immensely from his words and has committed to continue to grow as a human, particularly around matters around the LGBTQ community," his publicist, Theodore Palmer, said Thursday. "He believes that every individual has a right to love the way they choose to love and celebrate the differences of others on a daily basis." In fact, Culliver told the Bay Times he hopes to work on a project with University of Missouri defensive end Michael Sam, who would become the NFLs first openly gay player. Culliver also applauded Nets centre Jason Collins, who became the first openly gay NBA player last month. "I applaud Michael and Jason for their courage," Culliver told the Bay Times. "I have absolutely no problem playing and interacting with someone from the LGBTQ community and look forward to connecting with Michael soon on some projects." The 25-year-old Culliver, a third-round draft pick in 2011 out of South Carolina, made 47 tackles with two interceptions and a forced fumble during the 2012 season while starting six games for the Niners. They lost in the Super Bowl that season to Baltimore. The San Francisco Bay Times, in its 36th year of publication, defines itself as the oldest fully LGBT-owned and funded newspaper in the Bay Area. He was nine shots behind Masters champion Adam Scott going into the weekend at Bay Hill. He was still four back of the Australian he referred to as a "stud" going into the final round Sunday at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Every figured even par over the last three holes would do the trick. He made two bogeys. Even after a hearty handshake from the tournament host and a shiny trophy an arms length away from, Every summed up this wild day with just the right words. "I ... I ... I cant believe I won," he said. "I just ... I really cant." The tee shot that he feared might be out-of-bounds on No. 9 somehow bounced along a cart path and led to an unlikely birdie. He surged to a three-shot lead when Scotts touch with the putter vanished. Even with two bogeys on the last three holes -- he missed a 4-foot par putt on the 18th -- Every still closed with a 2-under 70. The last bogey made him sweat out the finish. Keegan Bradley, who birdied the 16th and 17th holes, had a 30-foot birdie putt on the 18th that would have forced a playoff. It was similar to the putt Tiger Woods has made so often to win at Bay Hill. Bradleys putt stayed left of the hole, and he finished one shot behind. Every finished at 13-under 275, one shot ahead of Bradley, who needed two late birdies for a 72. Scott was third. David Hearn (74) of Brantford, Ont., finished in a tie for 52nd at 1-over par. In his 92nd start as a pro on the PGA Tour, Every finally won at just the right time and just the right place. The 30-year-old who grew up 90 minutes away in Daytona Beach used to come to Bay Hill as a kid to watch the tournament. And he beat the Masters champion to earn his own spot in the Masters next month. "Being close to winning out here, it can be kind of discouraging because if you dont win, you just wonder if its ever going to happen," Every said. "And sometimes you tell yourself, Well, maybe its meant to be somewhere else, somewhere better. I dont see how it could get much better than this -- being so close to where I grew up and all the fans out there that were cheering me on. It was awesome." It was a nightmare for Scott. He shattered the Bay Hill record by taking a seven-shot lead after 36 holes and still led by three shots over Bradley going into Sunday. His putting stroke betrayed him. Scott made only five bogeys over 54 holes. He made five on Sunday alone. And he didnt make a birdie over the last 14 holes for a 76. "t;Im annoyed that I didnt do better today," Scott said.dddddddddddd "Sometimes youve got to be hard on yourself. Sometimes you dont. And I think I was getting into a really good spot, and an opportunity here to run away with an event and really take a lot of confidence. Im taking confidence anyway, from just some good play. But some opportunities youve got to take." Cocky by nature, Every choked back tears when he realized he had won. "Its hard," he said, stopping to compose himself. "Its tough, man. You just never know if its going to happen. You get there so many times. Its nice to get it done." He made it hard on himself. Every had a three-shot lead on the par-5 16th hole -- the easiest at Bay Hill -- when he drove into the woods, hit a tree trying to pitch out, laid up short of the water to play it safe and had to grind out a bogey. Scott, playing in the final group behind him, drilled 6-iron to 20 feet for an eagle putt that would have tied him for the lead. He three-putted for par. It was the second time in six tournaments that Scott lost a big lead on the last day. He had a four-shot advantage in the Australian Open and lost on the final hole to Rory McIlroy. This time, he didnt even have a realistic chance playing the 18th. "I really think the putting has let me down on both of those occasions," Scott said. "Today was a bit shaky. But this course was asking a lot of everyone today, and my short game just wasnt there. So that needs to be tightened up and probably shows that I need to do a bit more work on it to hold up under the pressure." Scott finished alone in third. He had to win Bay Hill to reach No. 1 in the world ranking when he arrived at Augusta National. Now, the No. 1 spot that Woods has held for the last year will be up for grabs at the Masters among Woods, Scott and Henrik Stenson, who tied for fifth at Bay Hill. Until Sunday, about the only time Every made news on the PGA Tour was when he was arrested and jailed on a misdemeanour drug possession charge at the 2010 John Deere Classic after agents were called to a casino hotel because of a strong odour of marijuana coming from the room he was in. Every paid the price with a three-month suspension that kept him from retaining his PGA Tour card. He once said earning his card back was his greatest achievement, though that sure takes a seat back to his win at Bay Hill. "Its just cool that I can say that I won on the PGA Tour," Every said. "But I always felt like my game was plenty good enough to win out here." PHOENIX -- Trevor Cahill pitched seven effective innings to win for the first time in nearly four months. Normally, it would have been the story of the night. Instead, it became a side note to Arizonas hitting display and Colorados side show. David Peralta hit a grand slam and Arizona tied a team record with eight hits in a nine-run eighth inning, turning what had been a close game into a 14-4 laugher over the bumbling Colorado Rockies on Saturday night. "Hitting is contagious," Arizonas Cliff Pennington said. "Its just one of those where guys get a couple of hits, you feel good and things start to roll." It just took a little while to get there. Cahill (2- did his job, overcoming a shaky defensive first inning by the Diamondbacks to win for the first time since April 23. Jorge De La Rosa (11- settled down after giving up a three-run homer to Mark Trumbo in the third inning and Nolan Arenado, who had three RBIs, pulled Colorado within a run on a solo homer in the eighth. By the time the bottom half was over, the Diamondbacks bats had exploded and the Rockies had imploded. The Rockies had two errors, a wild pitch and a passed ball in the inning. They also walked in a run. The Diamondbacks fed off their mistakes and each other, lashing balls all over Chase Field. Arizona had 15 hits, including seven for extra bases. Trumbo finished with four RBIs. Alfredo Marte added a solo homer. Pennington had three hits and scored four runs. Peralta, who had a run-scoring double in the first inning, put a big punctuation mark on the inning, sending his first career grand slam over the pool in right-centre, leaving even the home fans a bit stunned. When Rockies manager Walt Weiss called a team meeting before the game, this probably wasnt the kind of response he was expecting. "I didnt say abracadabra or anything," said Weiss, whose team has lost eight of nine. "I didnt say any magic words. I just tried to give them some perspective on where we are at." After shaky start to the season, Cahill had pitched well lately, but Saturdays game got off to an ominous start. Colorado scored a run in the first inning when Marte misplayed Arenados double in the left corner and Cahill dropped a throw from Trumbo at first to allow another run to come across. Cahill was sharp after that, allowing three runs on four hits and struck out seven for his first win as a starter since last Sept. 21 at Colorado. "Anytime if Im pitching and the team wins, its a good day," Cahill said. "It felt good." The Rockies pulled within a run on Arenados homer in the eighth inning, but his throw to home on Trumbos chopper in the bottom half sailed high for an error, allowing two runs to score. Arizona poured it on from there, compounding Colorados mistakes by knocking the ball around the park. HOT PERALTA Peralta was called up on June 1 and immediately started hitting. He hasnt really stopped. The rookie has set a club record with 67 hits through his first 56 games and has had at least two hits 25 times. He also became the first Diamondbacks rookie with at least five RBIs in a game since Mark Reynolds on Aug. 30, 2007 at San Diego. DE LA ROSAS START De La Rosa had a couple of shaky moments early, giving up Peraltas run-scoring double in the first inning and Trumbos homer in the third. The left-hander settled in after that, giving up four runs on six hits in six innings. "He always goes out and puts us in positions to win games and that is what I thought he did tonight," Weiss said. BIG INNING The Diamondbacks had eight hits in an inning eight other times, most recently on May 28 in the first against San Diego. The nine runs tied for second-most in team history behind a 13-run inning against Pittsburgh in 2010. TRAINING ROOM Rockies: RF Michael Cuddyer, out since fracturing his shoulder on June 5, went 1 for 3 with an RBI for rookie-level Grand Junction in his latest rehab game. He is 6 for 10 with three doubles and four RBIs in three rehab games. Diamondbacks: SS Chris Owings tested his bruised shoulder with 30 swings in the batting cage and is hoping to progress to a simulated game. UP NEXT Rockies: Franklin Morales, who will start the series final on Sunday, has held left-handers to a .232 average. Diamondbacks: LHP Wade Miley had his worst start of the season his last time out, allowing 10 runs in 4 2-3 innings against Kansas City on Aug. 5. INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Colts are a long, long way from being healed. Two days after Peyton Manning publicly complained about the dour atmosphere at team headquarters following a 2-14 season and a rash of firings, Colts owner Jim Irsay introduced his new head coach and then stunned everyone by calling his franchise player a "politician" who had decided to air dirty laundry. "I dont think its in the best interest to paint the horseshoe in a negative light, I really dont," Irsay told reporters, referring to the teams longtime logo. "The horseshoe always comes first, and I think one thing hes always known, because hes been around it so long, is that, you know, you keep it in the family. If youve got a problem you talk to each other, its not about campaigning or anything like that." The comments suggest there is a rift between Manning and Irsay, who is just six weeks from a deadline to pay the four-time league MVP a US$28 million bonus or risk losing him as a free agent. And it all blew up in public on a day the team desperately wanted attention focused on Chuck Pagano, the Ravens defensive co-ordinator who takes over as head coach with a host of problems to address. The biggest question mark is Manning, the face of the franchise and the primary reason for its run of success over the past decade. He is clearly upset with the fallout of the Colts dismal season in which he never played a down after Sept. 8 neck surgery -- his third such procedure in a span of 19 months. In the past three weeks, the Colts have fired vice chairman Bill Polian and general manager Chris Polian, coach Jim Caldwell and most of Caldwells assistants. Irsay hired 39-year-old Ryan Grigson as the new general manager and on Wednesday chose Pagano as Caldwells replacement. Last week, actor Rob Lowe caused a media frenzy by writing on Twitter that Manning was about to retire. The story got so much attention that even Pagano, who was preparing for the Ravens AFC championship game against New England, apparently took notice. "You know, Ive got a text or a call out to Rob Lowe and I havent heard back yet, so Im going to have to get back to you on that one," Pagano said when asked if he expected to be coaching Manning next season. But the saga has taken an even more dramatic twist in the last 48 hours. Manning told The Indianapolis Star that his only real conversation with Grigson, a first-time GM, had come in passing and that the vast overhaul at team headquarters had everyone "walking around on eggshells." He said it wasnt healthy for his healing, and then said that he had no idea where Irsay stood on the question of whether he was going to play again for the Colts. Many analysts believe Mannings comments indicated that he was unhappy in Indianapolis and may be looking for a way out. Whatever the explanation, Irsay didnt like it one bit. "I have so much affection and appreciation for Peyton. I mean were family. We always will be and we are," Irsay said. "Hes a politician. I mean look at, when it comes to being competitive, lets just say on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the highest, were both 11s, OK? So theres been plenty of eggshells scattered around this building by him with his competitive desire to win." Manning quickly began on a quest to mend fences. Within hours of Irsays comments, Manning told The Star he didnt intend to start a public feud. "At this point, Mr. Irsay and I owe it to each other and to the fans of the organization to handle this appropriately and professionally, and I think we will.dddddddddddd. Ive already reached out to Mr. Irsay," Manning said. "I wasnt trying to paint the Colts in a bad light, but its tough when so many people youve known for so long are suddenly leaving. I feel very close to a lot of these guys and weve done great things together. Its hard to watch an old friend clean out his office. Thats all I was trying to say. "I just want to keep rehabbing and working hard, and when the time is right for Mr. Irsay and I to sit down, I look forward to a healthy conversation about my future. Ive worked too hard and have such great respect and have so many great relationships inside the building and out, and its incredibly important that those remain." The drama may be just beginning. Now that Irsay has his people in place in the front office, Pagano can focus his attention on selecting a staff. Grigson said Pagano will make those choices. Irsays decisions will be much more difficult. Indys horrendous season means the Colts landed the No. 1 overall pick, which Irsay has said they will use for their quarterback of the future -- presumably Stanfords Andrew Luck. If so, Irsay must decide how much money he wants to invest in one position. Manning signed a five-year, US$90 million contract in July and is due that bonus in March. The perennial Pro Bowler is said to be recovering well from his latest surgery, but he will also turn 36 on March 24 -- a little more than two weeks after the March 8 deadline to pay that bonus. Irsay reiterated Thursday that his choice will come down to Mannings health, not money. "I think fans already understand that," Irsay said when asked whether Manning may have played his final game in Colts blue. "This isnt an ankle, it isnt a shoulder. Often times the NFL is criticized for putting someone out there at risk, and Im not going to doing that. I think he and I just need to see where his health is because this isnt about money or anything else. Its about his life and his long-term health." Thats only the start of the Colts questions. Grigson and Irsay must figure out how to free up salary cap space and what to do with a group of high-priced veterans such as Gary Brackett and Melvin Bullitt, and whether they want to bring back some of their key free agents such as Robert Mathis, Jeff Saturday and Reggie Wayne. Not surprisingly, Pagano wants as many of those guys back as he can get, including Manning. "I just came from a great organization and just spent some time with one of the greatest leaders (Ray Lewis) to ever play this game," Pagano said. "And theres one of those leaders right here (Manning) and those are the types of individuals and people that you have to surround yourself with." But its Irsay who must make that decision, and its obvious that the two havent been talking much lately -- something Irsay acknowledged will change between now and March 8. "Its a very simple issue, its a health issue," Irsay said. "Its one of those things where just when you think its going in the right direction, things change," he said, explaining later there was no indication Manning has had a setback over the last month. "Its been very hard on everyone around here, and its been very hard on Peyton, too." NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Los Angeles Angels Mike Trout, Pittsburghs Andrew McCutchen and Washingtons Ian Desmond have won their third straight Silver Slugger Awards. Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista also won for a third time after taking the honours in 2010 and 2011 as well. The 34-year-old put up his best numbers in four seasons in 2014 with 35 home runs, 103 RBI, a .286 average, and on-base percentage of .403 and a slugging percentage of .524 in 155 games. Chicago White Sox rookie first baseman Jose Abreu and Houston second baseman Jose Altuve were among eight first-time winners announced Thursday by Louisville Slugger, which presents the annual honours following voting by major league managers and coaches for the top hitter in each league at every position. Texas third baseman Adrian Beltre won for the fourth time and was joined on the AL team by White Sox shortstop Alexei Ramirez, Cleveland catcher Yan Gomes and Detroit designated hitter Victor Martinez. Trout joined Mike Piazza (1993-95) as the only players to win in each of their first three full big league seasons and was joined in the outfield by Bautista and Clevelands Michael Brantley. The NL team included Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, Pittsburgh second baseman Neil Walker and Washingtons left side of the infield, with Desmond at shortstop and Anthony Rendon at third. McCutchen was picked in the outfield along with Miamis Giancarlo Stanton and Atlantas Justin Upton. World Series champion San Francisco earned battery honours, with Madison Bumgarner winning at pitcher and Buster Posey at catcher. Brantley, Bumgarner, Gomes, Rendon, Stanton and Walker also were first-time winners. Beltre, Gonzalez and Martinez each earned $100,000 bonuses; Trout $75,000; Brantley, Bumgarner and Posey $50,000 apiece; Altuve $25,000; and Abreu and Ramirez $15,000 each. Check out todays trade rumours and speculation from around the NHL beat. And follow TradeCentre on TSN and TSN.ca through Deadline Day for all the updates. Open Mike The Los Angeles Kings offered everyone a free shot at centre Mike Richards on Monday by putting the 29-year-old on waivers. TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun wrote that the Kings had been trying to find a trading partner for Richards - including the Toronto Maple Leafs and Winnipeg Jets - over the past month. A one-time 30-goal scorer, Richards has underperformed in Hollywood, failing to eclipse even the 20-goal plateau in three-plus seasons with the Kings. He has five goals and 10 assists in 47 games with the Kings this year and still has five years remaining on his contract at an annual cap hit of $5.75 million. He is making $7 million this season, but his deal back-dives over the next five seasons, finishing with two seasons at $3 million. TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie added the Calgary Flames to the list of teams that have recently talked to the Kings about acquiring Richards in exchange for a bad contract of their own. Call Me With reports surfacing over the weekend that the Dallas Stars might have interest in some blue line help from the Toronto Maple Leafs, TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger told TSN Radio 1050 Torontos Mike Richards Monday morning that action on the Leafs is picking up. Dreger said trade talk picked up mid- to-late last week for Leafs management and that there is an expectation that it could further intensify in the next seven days. Dreger listed Dallas and the Anaheim Ducks as teams that would have interest in Cody Franson and that the Leafs would likely look for a roster player in his early 20s as the key component in any return. Failing that, Dreger said, the Leafs could be looking for multiple picks, including a potential first-rounder.dddddddddddd. Franson is a prime target for teams looking for offence from the point since the 27-year-old is slated to become an unrestricted free agent at seasons end. Toronto entered the All-Star break 11th in the Eastern Conference, 10 points out of the final wild card playoff berth. Rent Increase The Winnipeg Jets could look for a short-term solution as the trade deadline nears. Winnipeg entered the break seventh in the West and in excellent standing to earn their first post-season berth since relocating from Atlanta. Should the team want to build up its depth before the deadline a rental might make the most sense, writes the Winnipeg Suns Ken Wiebe. The options that might be most attractive to the Jets - according to Wiebe - are depth forwards that could bolster the teams second and third lines. He posted a top five that included Leafs duo Daniel Winnik and Mike Santorelli and Edmonton Oilers forward Matt Hendricks amongst others. Bean Counting The Boston Bruins could still be looking to bolster their forward ranks. Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe believes the Bs may circle around to Buffalo Sabres winger Chris Stewart as a possible deadline addition. Shinzawa writes that the two sides were in discussions before, but the price tag on the 27-year-old was too high to finalize a deal. Stewart has twice eclipsed the 25-goal plateau, but has registered just six tallies in 45 games this season with cellar-dwelling Sabres. He is in the final year of a two-year deal that carries a $4.15 million average salary and is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent at seasons end. Despite holding down the final wild card playoff berth in the East heading into the All-Star break, the Bruins offence could use a boost. The team is averaging 2.58 goals-per-game this season, good for 11th in the Conference. ALAMEDA, Calif. - Oakland Raiders running back Rashad Jennings was speaking to a group of local high school students earlier this week when the conversation turned to the importance of being prepared when opportunities in life arise. The veteran backup is certainly qualified to speak on the topic, having received a crash course on it over the past 15 months. Jennings will make his second start of the season Sunday against the New York Giants while Darren McFadden rests his sore hamstring. He also started six games for Jacksonville in 2012 while Maurice Jones-Drew was sidelined with a foot injury. The message Jennings delivered? Dont wait or its too late. "When I was in high school I kept a quote: When opportunity presents itself, its too late to prepare for it," Jennings said. "So every day be prepared to be that guy." Thats been the case for Jennings, who has been a jack-of-all-trades in his first season with the Raiders. Besides filling in for McFadden, hes blocked two punts and recovered an onside kick on special teams this season. Despite his part-time status, Jennings is also the only Oakland player to catch more than six passes in a game this season. He had eight against Washington on Sept. 29 after McFadden left that game injured, then grabbed another seven in last weeks 49-20 loss to Philadelphia. When McFadden got hurt last week against Philadelphia, Jennings responded with his first 100-yard game in nearly three years. "It just goes back to the mental preparation and trying to put yourself in the game," Jennings said. "You never know when youre going to get called, you really dont. I dont think thats coined as much as its really said and its kind of passed over. But you dont know, you never know. So make sure youre ready." Jennings game against the Eagles marked just the second time this season that an Oakland running back has topped the century mark. McFadden ran for 129 yards against Jacksonville in Week 2 but has been mostly ineffective and is averaging just 3.6 yards a carry. Quarterback Terrelle Pryor, who has a pair of 100-yard rushing games this season, has given the ground game a lift. He leads the team with 485 yards rushing and is the primary reason the Raiders have the fourth-ranked running offence. Jennings would be content with anything as long as Oakland wins. The Raiders (3-5) play four of their next five games on the road and are just 7-25 in November since 2005. McFadden didnt accompany the team on its trip to New York. Neither did right tackle Matt McCants, who has a foot injury. McCants injury means second-round pick Menelik Watson will make his first start in New York, one week after making his NFL debut. Hell also be the third different starting right tackle Oakland has used this season. "Obviously, hes gotten limited exposure but we have confidence in him," Raiders coach Dennis Allen said Friday. "Really, thats what your job is. When youre called upon to go in and do a job, you have to go in and do the job. Thats the way of the National Football League." Rookie nickelback D.J. Hayden will also be held out of the game. Oaklands first-round draft pick injured a groin muscle earlier this week and has been held out of practice each of the past two days. ___ AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org Adidas Superstar Shoes Sale . After surprisingly losing its Group D opener to Costa Rica, Uruguays qualifying chances have now been given a major lift, while Englands hopes of advancing to the round of 16 are in real jeopardy after its worst World Cup start in more than half a century.PHOENIX -- The Arizona Diamondbacks dismal season got worse Saturday with the news that All-Star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt has a fractured left hand. Goldschmidt, runner-up in National League MVP voting last season, was hurt when he was hit above his ring finger by a pitch from Ernesto Frieri in the ninth inning of Friday nights 9-4 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Diamondbacks have placed Goldschmidt on the 15-day disabled list and there was no word before Saturdays game on how long he is expected to be sidelined. "I was holding out hope. Wasnt trying to think about it being broken," said Goldschmidt, who stayed in the game after being hit and advanced to second base before the final out was made. Goldschmidt was to be examined further on Saturday after getting X-rays late Friday. He broke a bone in his left hand, the hamate, while in college and had it removed, but had not had any other injuries of that sort since. "I was trying to make a fist, which I can do," said Goldschmidt, who had no protective cast, splint or bandage over his hand as of Saturday afternoon. "After the game there was some swelling. I knew there was something. I was just hoping just a bad bruise or something like that. But unfortunately it wasnt." Despite his teams overall woes, Goldschmidt is among the NL leaders in several hitting categories. He leads the league in doubles and extra-base hits, is tied for first in runs scored, is second in total bases and is third in RBIs and walks. Voted a starter by fans in this years All-Star game, Goldschmdt is batting .300 with 19 home runs. He has 75 runs scored, 220 total bases, 39 doubles, a triple, 64 walks and nine stolen bases. A Gold Glove winner last year, Goldschmidt has seven errors in 109 games. Arizona recalled outfielder Alfredo Marte from Triple-A Reno to take Goldschmidts roster spot. Goldschmidt was out of the lineup for only the second time this season Friday night but entered in a double-switch in the ninth inning of a gamme that was tied 4-4.dddddddddddd. The incident immediately drew the wrath of several Diamondbacks players, and there was a showdown between the teams after the game in front of the Arizona dugout. No one did anything but talk, though. While catcher Miguel Montero called the situation "a little shady," Goldschmidt said after the game he didnt think he was hit purposely and reiterated that Saturday. "Its part of the game. I mean, who knows? People get hit, its just part of it," Goldschmidt said. "So once I figure out the rehab (plan), just go with that and obviously youd like to play, but cant change what happened." Frieri apologized several times for what happened, saying he didnt mean to hit Goldschmidt. "I feel bad. Im sorry," Frieri said. "I know that hes a really valuable player for the Diamondbacks. I just try to make my pitches and in this game, if you dont make your pitches inside, youre going to get hit. "It wasnt on purpose. I dont have anything against him. I was just trying to get him out," Frieri added. Goldschmidt isnt the only Diamondback in recent history to have to deal with a broken bone from being hit with a pitch. Second baseman Aaron Hill missed 10 weeks last season after being hit on his left hand, and outfielder A.J. Pollock was hit on the right hand on May 31 and is only playing in rehab games. "It hurts. Hes one of the best players on our team for sure. One of the best players in the league," Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said. "There are risks to playing the game. Were very familiar with guys getting hit in the hand." It could mean a new approach when dealing with inside pitches. "Maybe something to talk about, just moving forward about how to turn into the pitch a little better," Gibson added. Jordan Pacheco played first base Saturday night against Pittsburgh. Gibson said outfielder Mark Trumbo could also get some action at first base down the road. New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Connecticut will start the womens college basketball season the same way it ended the 2013-14 campaign, as the top team in the nation. UConn won its ninth national championship last April with a 79-58 drubbing of previously unbeaten Notre Dame and on Thursday received all 35 first-place votes from a nationwide media panel in the preseason Associated Press poll. Its the 10th time the Huskies, who ended last season 40-0, will start the season as the nations top team. They went on to win the national title on six of those occasions. South Carolina, Notre Dame, Tennessee and Texas A&M round out the top five. Stanford, Duke, Baylor, Texas and Maryland are teams six through 10. The next 10 consist of Kentucky, Louisville, North Carolina, Michigan State, California, Nebraska, West Virginia, DePaul, Iowa and Oregon State. Oklahoma State, Dayton, UCLA, Rutgers and Syracuse finish out the top 25. Nike Air Force 1 Low Sale . But for the 20 Canadians in the field, it is a rare home game with some tangible benefits. "Its great," said Roger Sloan, who plays out of the Tobiano Golf Club in Kamloops, B.C. "I stopped at Tim Hortons before my round." Perhaps it was the power of that morning double-double that pushed Sloan to a score of four-under 67, the lowest among the Canadians who teed off in the morning wave. "I got off to a really good start," said Sloan. "Birdied my first hole and had a couple of really good birdie opportunities in my first few holes. It was just a solid ball-striking day." Sloan had it to four under through his first nine with birdies on the third, fifth and ninth holes. He pushed that to five under with another one at the 12th before giving that back at the 17th. The New Course at Ashburn isnt long by Web.Com Tour standards but the greens here are providing a suitable defence. The putting surfaces have strong (a polite word) slopes that make getting the ball close on approaches tough and the putting even more difficult. "The greens are tricky," Sloan stated, "so you really have to be in control of the ball to get it close." By the time 36 holes are in the bag, "tricky" might be a nice description for how the players view these greens. They will most certainly be the deciding factor in who wins. Sloan, of course, is hoping that will be him. Hes in his second season on the Triple-A circuit and has been playing some more consistent golf this season, making the cut in seven of 12 starts. However, hes only missed once in his last seven events, showing steady improvement. A year ago, he was anything but consistent, making just five cuts in 19 starts. However there was a slight off-course distraction as he got married. This year, however, his goal was to avoid the highs and lows, and even out his play. "Ive been playing solid all year,&quoot; he stated, "putting together some solid rounds of golf.dddddddddddd Thats what I really wanted to do this year. You never know when those really good rounds are going to come. You just have to keep plugging away and stay focused on one shot at a time." Talking to Sloan its easy to see hes mature and keeps a good perspective on life, something that isnt always found in younger players. He sees the world beyond golf and is obviously well-grounded. He is in the middle of a seven-week run of tournaments but doesnt seem frustrated or burned out or home-sick, despite the fact his wife rarely is able to join him on Tour. He understands his job and the career hes chosen. He prepared himself for this lengthy road trip and is focused on his game. "Theres no job security out here as you might have on the PGA Tour where I can take next week off," Sloan stated. "You have a lot of guys playing really well, lot of great players, too. Theres pressure to play well but at the same time, if youre out here, you have the ability so trust yourself." Unlike a number of the other Canadians such as Adam Hadwin or MacKenzie Hughes, Sloan is playing without much in the way of outside financial backing. He has no major sponsors and wasnt a beneficiary of Golf Canadas Young Pro program when it was announced earlier this year. In fact, hes never really been on the Golf Canada radar, when he was an amateur or now. Its somewhat hard to believe -- actually its shocking -- that with his talent and personality, a company wouldnt embrace him and get behind him. Still, the ever-optimistic Sloan doesnt see that as a problem, but rather a fact that will change only by his doing. "Ive been blessed to play this game professionally on my own accord," he stated. "Its taught me a lot of good values. Its been tough, Ive had to make a lot of sacrifices, my wife and I, in order to make that work. Its tough but at the same time I have to keep focused on playing well and ultimately achieving my goal of winning on the PGA Tour and the money kind of takes care of itself." INDIAN WELLS, Calif. -- Lleyton Hewitt scratched out a 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-3 victory over fellow Australian Matthew Ebden on Thursday night in the first round of the BNP Paribas Open to move within one of becoming the third active ATP Tour player to win 600 matches. Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are the only active players to reach the milestone. The 33-year-old Hewitt will face 17th-seeded Kevin Anderson in the second round. "Ive always been pretty successful," said Hewitt, who won his 29th career title this year by beating Federer in the final at Brisbane, Australia. Hewitt won the 29th title of his career by beating Federer in the final at Brisbane, Australia, this year and said what has been most important to him in his 15-plus years on the tour is "that never-say-die attitude; hang in there and fight for every point." He did that against Ebden, shaking off the loss of a 5-1 lead in the first set to win the final five points of a tiebreaker, after Ebden slipped and fell pursuing a ball, and finally holding serve to close the match after being up 5-1 in the final set. PHILADELPHIA -- Rajon Rondo is starting to feel like his old self -- and the Boston Celtics are starting to win again. Rondo had eight points, 11 assists and nine rebounds in his eighth game back from a serious knee injury, and Jeff Green scored 17 of his 36 points in the third quarter in the Celtics 114-108 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday night. "Its only a matter of time before we got on the same page," Green said about Rondo. "He puts me in my spots, gets it to me in the open floor. He sees the floor very well. Hes helping me get into a good rhythm. I have to continue to make sure I get open for him." Jared Sullinger had 19 points and 10 rebounds for Boston. The Celtics improved to 17-33, winning their second straight game after losing 19 of 22. Rondo had 19 points and 10 assists in Bostons win over Orlando on Sunday. "Im getting back to my old self," Rondo said. "Im not there yet but Ill take the progress." Brandon Bass had 18 points for the Celtics, 2-6 since Rondos return. Thaddeus Young had 20 points, and Tony Wroten added 18 for Philadelphia. The 76ers (15-35) have lost four straight and 14 of their last 17 games. They also have lost six in a row at home for the first time since the 1996-97 season. Spencer Hawes added 13 points and 13 rebounds for Philadelphia and Lavoy Allen had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Sixers coach Brett Brown noticed the difference in the Celtics with an effective Rondo. "Hes their compass," Brown said. "Hes a great point guard and a leader." Green scored 13 straight points during a 2-minute stretch in the third quarter, capped by a 3-pointer that gave the Celtics their biggest lead to that point, 83-71 with 3:44 left. Boston coach Brad Stevens credited Rondo for helping Green succeed. "He made a lot of shots and Rondo found him a couple of times early," Stevens said. "His job is simplified with Rajon out there. He pushed the tempo better than Ive seen him in the first eight games. He got us a lot of good looks. His greatest strength is he makes everyone else better and thats really shown true the last two games." Said Rondo: "Everybody needs easy buckets, especially a guy (Green) whos that talented and athletic. All he needs to do is see it go through a couple of times, get to the free-throw line. Whoever hits the floor helps each other up. Were a team and thats what they did on that particular play." The Sixers havent won since last Wednesdays buzzer-beating 95-94 win at Boston. INDIANAPOLIS -- The Atlanta Hawks are back on track, and Josh Smith is a big reason. Smith had 27 points and nine rebounds, leading the Hawks to their third straight victory, 101-96 over the Indiana Pacers on Tuesday night. "Josh has been on a roll as of late," coach Larry Drew said. "Weve been going through him offensively and defensively. Hes been an anchor for us. Tonight I felt he played another phenomenal ball game. He was just solid." Smith scored 13 points in the first quarter, 11 in the third, and fell three points shy of his season high. He passed the credit onto his teammates. "Its great when your teammates lift you up," Smith said. "That really helped in the third and fourth quarter. Were coming together and figuring out a way to win ball games." Jannero Pargo had 16 points, while Marvin Williams and Zaza Pachulia each scored 12 for the Hawks. David West scored a season-high 24 points for the Pacers, who have lost two straight. Danny Granger had 19 points and eight rebounds, and George Hill scored 15 points off the bench for Indiana. "They kept us off balance with good ball movement and we couldnt seem to adjust to their schemes," West said. "We just werent able to figure them out in the time to stop them." The Hawks led by as much as 16 points in the first half, but Grangers 3-pointer tied it at 62. Wests basket gave Indiana its last lead at 71-69 before Williams answered with a 3-pointer. The Hawks outrebounded the Pacers 45-37 and grabbed 14 offensive rebounds. The Pacers returned home after losing Monday to the Chicago Bulls on the road, 92-72, snapping a season-best, six-game winning streak. "We didnt defend the 3 well and didnt do a good enough job on the defensive glass," Pacers coach Frank Vogel said. "It cost us the game. I dont think we were ourselves the last two games."
