MINNEAPOLIS -- Joe Mauer hit a two-run double that just missed reaching the seats and Kevin Correia pitched a smooth six innings to help the Minnesota Twins beat the Chicago White Sox for the third straight game, 4-3 on Saturday. Glen Perkins pitched another tenuous ninth inning but got his 19th save in 22 tries after giving up two runs to blow one the night before. Adam Eaton led off with a triple and scored on Gordon Beckhams sacrifice fly. Pinch-hitter Paul Konerko then smacked a single up the middle, but Perkins struck out Jose Abreu and Adam Dunn to end it and punctuated the final swing and miss with a big pump of his left arm. With the Twins trailing 2-1, Mauers drive in the fifth inning soared over left fielder Alejandro De Aza and landed about halfway up the wall. Kendrys Morales hit the next pitch for an RBI single against Andre Rienzo (4-5), who lost his fifth straight start. Correia (4- gave up five runs or more in five of his first 12 starts, sliding toward replacement in the rotation, but the 33-year-old right-hander has pitched superbly in three turns since. In 18 innings, Correia has allowed a total of two earned runs and walked only four. He surrendered his share of sharp drives on this picture-perfect first-day-of-summer afternoon, but the defence behind him didnt do him any favours. Centre fielder Sam Fuld tried to dive for a two-out sinking liner by Conor Gillaspie in the first inning, but the ball skipped in front of and past him for a triple and Abreu followed with an RBI single. Then third baseman Eduardo Escobar bungled a routine ground ball by letting it slide between his legs to start the second inning. The White Sox only needed a single, a walk and a two-out hit-by-pitch to produce the unearned run. Correias 3-1 bases-loaded fastball bounced off Beckhams elbow and hit catcher Kurt Suzuki in the throat, but he was all right to stay in the game. Escobar committed a second error on a similar play the next inning, but Correia escaped trouble with a double-play groundball by Dayan Viciedo. The Brazilian-born Rienzo, who debuted for the White Sox last summer, was 4-0 after his first six starts following the rotator cuff injury that knocked Felipe Paulino out of action. Rienzo has struggled badly since, though, by finishing the fifth inning in only two of his last five turns. His ERA during the losing streak is 8.87. The Twins hit three straight two-out singles in the second inning to load the bases, and Fuld walked to force in the first run. Then Rienzo hit Brian Dozier with a pitch to put two runners on for Mauer in the fifth inning, setting the struggling six-time All-Star and three-time batting champion up for just his fourth multi-RBI game this season. Two of those have been in this series. The White Sox have hung around the pack in the American League Central all year, never losing or winning more than four games in a row, but this has been a rough start to an 11-game road trip. They fell a season-high five games under .500 and back into last place. The Twins took a five-game losing streak into this series. Their starters have a 2.41 ERA over the last 11 games. NOTES: Mauer has 18 of his 20 RBIs this season at Target Field. ... Gillaspie went 2 for 4 to raise his average to .340, but he doesnt have enough at-bats to qualify yet for the league batting lead. In his last 30 games, Gillaspie is batting .366. ... Twins RF Oswaldo Arcia is hitless in his last 27 at-bats. ... The White Sox will send John Danks (6-5, 3.97) to the mound for the series finale Sunday, and Phil Hughes (7-3, 3.09 ERA) will pitch for the Twins. Danks has a 5.70 ERA in six road starts this season. Hughes gave up three HRs in his last home start, the only time a team has taken him deep in his last eight turns. ... White Sox manager Robin Ventura successfully challenged a call in the third inning, when Brian Dozier originally led off with a double. Replays showed Beckhams tag grazed Doziers foot before it landed on the base. Santi Cazorla Arsenal Jersey . LOUIS -- The longest winning streak in Saint Louis history ended Thursday night with a surprising loss at home to Duquesne. That was hardly the most disappointing part of it as far as forward Dwayne Evans was concerned. "The streak didnt really mean much to us," Evans said. "Its a tough loss because theres a championship on the line, not just because it broke the streak." Micah Mason had 22 points and Jerry Jones added 19, leading Duquesne to a 71-64 victory. Saint Louis (25-3, 12-1 Atlantic 10) had won 19 straight since dropping a 70-65 decision on Dec. 1 to unbeaten Wichita State, now ranked No. 2 in the country. With a win, the Billikens could have clinched at least a tie for the Atlantic 10 regular-season title. But it was the Dukes who looked like title contenders Thursday. "They did a really nice job and we just didnt play well enough," Saint Louis coach Jim Crews said. "Weve played well and weve been fortunate. Tonight, we didnt play well enough. "We have no license that were going to win. One teams going to win and one teams going to lose. Whoever plays the best (wins). Thats how it is, and they played better than us." Mason, who entered leading the nation in 3-point shooting percentage (.554), hit four of five from behind the arc for Duquesne (12-15, 4-10), which beat a top-10 opponent on the road for the first time since defeating No. 6 Bradley 73-72 on March 5, 1962. Duquesne improved to 5-28 on the road against top 10 teams. The Dukes, who were 14-point underdogs, are 25-55 overall against teams ranked in the top 10. Although it looked like a mismatch on paper, Jones said he and the Dukes could feel this one coming. "Really, this team was ready to get beat and I just wannted to be a part of it and so did everybody else," he said.dddddddddddd Evans had 10 points and 12 rebounds for Saint Louis. Mike McCall Jr. led the Billikens with 18 points, while Jordair Jett (13 points) and Rob Loe (12 points) also were in double digits. Saint Louis will try to rebound Saturday when it visits VCU. Crew said the team will not vary its approach after losing for the first time in nearly three months. "We do the same thing whether we win or lose," he said. "We just try to clean up what we did wrong. We address those things we did wrong, we keep working on our fundamentals and try to get better and move on with the next team. It doesnt make a difference win or lose. Our routine is pretty much the same." The Billikens appeared to be in good shape after Jetts layup with 13:44 remaining gave them a 42-35 lead. But the Dukes took command with an 18-2 run capped by a 3-pointer and then a layup by Jones that made it 53-44 with 7:41 left. Saint Louis fought back and had a chance to cut it to a one-possession game with under a minute remaining. Loe, however, missed a free throw and that led to Jones layup at the other end with 52 seconds left that made it 63-57. The Dukes played Saint Louis tough in their first meeting, losing 76-72 at home on Jan. 22. Duquesne was up for the challenge again Thursday and showed it early as Mason hit his first two shots from behind the arc to help the Dukes grab a 13-8 advantage. Mason was called for his second foul shortly thereafter and went to the bench, and the Billikens began to take advantage of his absence. Saint Louis went 1 for 7 from 3-point range in the first half, but Jake Barnetts 3 with 44 seconds left gave the Billikens a 29-25 halftime lead. beatdown in San Antonio o
OKLAHOMA CITY -- The shots werent falling early for Kevin Durant and never fell for Russell Westbrook, so it was Reggie Jackson and Jeremy Lamb who carried the Oklahoma City Thunder to their most impressive win of the season. Durant finished with 24 points and 13 rebounds, Jackson matched his career high with 23 points on 10-of-14 shooting and Lamb scored 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting, lifting the Thunder to a 94-88 win over San Antonio and snapping the Spurs 11-game winning streak. Jackson scored eight straight points for the Thunder during a surge early in the fourth quarter that put Oklahoma City ahead by 11 points. The Spurs rallied within three points before Jackson and Durant combined to score the Thunders final 13 points and put the game away. "We couldnt guard (Jackson) tonight," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "He really helped them. He was basically the difference in the game. He did a great job." Serge Ibaka added 17 points and 11 rebounds for Oklahoma City, which is 7-0 at home, the franchises best home start since 2004-05, when it was in Seattle. The Thunder have won five straight, their longest streak of the season. The Thunder took control of a tight game with an 8-0 run in the third quarter and withstood a run by San Antonio midway through the fourth. "I just attacked gaps and shots went down for all of us," Jackson said. "We just kept trying to get in the lane and make the passes for the next man and just keep attacking the bigs off pick-and-rolls. . I think we as a team, we did it pretty successfully tonight, but it all started defensively." Tony Parker had 16 points and seven assists for San Antonio (13-2), which was seeking the best start in franchise history. The Spurs also started 13-1 during the 2010-11 season. Portland, which entered Wednesday on an 11-game winning streak, is the only other team to have beaten San Antonio this season. During their previous eight games, the Spurs had beaten opponents by an average of 19.1 points, with all those wins by nine or more points. But fellow Western Conference power Oklahoma City (10-3) represented a step up in competition, and the Spurs lost for the third straight time at Chesapeake Energy Arena. San Antonio shot 39.1 per cent from the field and went 7 of 27 (25.9 per cent) from 3-point range. The latter number particularly irked Popovich, who said his team didnt attack the basket as much as hed like. "I thought a pretty good percentage of ours tonight were hurried or frenetic at times," Popovich said. "I didnt like our selection." Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks agreed with Popovich that the majority of the Spurs 3-point attempts benefited the Thunder. "I thought our defence was outstanding," Brooks said. "I think in the last three or four games weve put a string of defensive efforts and defensive performances together we can continue to build on. "Going into this game theyd won 11 in a row and were the hottest team in basketball and with the way they score theyre a hard team to guard. I thought our guys did a good job with our length making them miss shots and I thought defence was the key tonight." Durant and Westbrook combined to shoot 6 of 24 in the first half -- 1 of 9 from 3-point range -- and the Spurs led 46-43 at halftime. Meanwhile, Kawhi Leonard went 6 of 12 from the field and had 13 first-half points for San Antonio. With usual stalwarts Durant and Westbrook struggling, Ibaka picked up the slack early in the third quarter, scoring 10 straight points for Oklahoma City coming out of halftime. That seemed to wake up the Thunder and they went on an 8-0 run to take their largest lead to that point at 59-52 on a dunk by Durant at the 5:08 mark. Lamb hit a 3-pointer and a 2-pointer in the final 1:35 of the third quarter to extend the lead to 68-59 and Jacksons driving layup gave the Thunder a 78-67 lead with 8:47 left. It was the first double-digit advantage for either team. That was Oklahoma Citys last field goal for more than 4 1/2 minutes, allowing the Spurs to gain ground. Marco Belinellis basket with 6:46 left pulled San Antonio within 79-76 but then the Spurs went cold as well, missing their next four shots. Ibakas putback with 4:12 left ended the Thunders drought and Jackson followed with an 11-foot jumper to make it 83-77. Durant, who finished 10 of 23 from the field, then grabbed the rebound after a miss by Leonard and drove the length of the court for a basket while being fouled. He made the free throw to put Oklahoma City ahead 86-77 with 2:56 left. Jackson "was aggressive all night getting to the rim," Durant said. "Thats what he does. Nobody can stay in front of him. . He gave us a nice spark and those guys, him and Jeremy, Fish (Derek Fisher), those guys are really the reason we won the basketball game." NOTES: Before the game, Popovich and Oklahoma City general manager Sam Presti chatted briefly outside the Spurs locker room. Presti was an assistant GM with the Spurs before taking the same job with the Thunder franchise in 2007. . Referee Monty McCutchen called Oklahoma City G Derek Fisher for three fouls on one San Antonio second-quarter possession. After an illegal screen call on the Spurs to end the possession, Fisher told McCutchen, "Thats terrible." McCutchen responded, "Dont talk to me." Kiko Casilla Jersey .C. -- Larry Nelson shot his age for a share of the lead in the SAS Championship, while Nick Faldo failed to finish the round in his first regular Champions Tour event. Rose played about 10 minutes Monday night in New Jersey, and coach Tom Thibodeau declined to say for certain before tipoff whether the NBA MVP would play in New Orleans. Rose is averaging nearly 23 points and eight assists for Chicago, which has entered its game against the Hornets on a three-game winning streak and with the most victories (21) in the NBA. Pepe Jersey . LOUIS -- Edinson Volquez tossed a complete game six-hitter to win his fourth straight start and the Pittsburgh Pirates downed the St. Cristiano Ronaldo Jersey . The Prince George Cougars and Regina Pats have both entered agreements to transfer ownership, the WHL said Wednesday in a statement.CLEVELAND -- LeBron James could finally be himself. He smiled easily, joked around and blew a few kisses to the crowd. This trip home was different than the others. There was less tension, fewer boos, nothing to fear. This time, James almost felt welcomed. James scored 28 points and seemed more relaxed than in previous games back in Cleveland, leading the Miami Heat to their eighth straight win, 95-84 over the Cavaliers on Wednesday night. He added eight rebounds and eight assists in his fifth game as a visitor against the Cavs, the team that drafted him and the one he led to the NBA finals before leaving as a free agent three years ago to chase NBA championships in Miami. James improved to 11-1 against Cleveland. Unlike his previous four visits, James wasnt the target of nonstop booing or taunts. There wasnt the hatred that filled Quicken Loans Arena the first time he came back on Dec. 2, 2010. "Its been less and less since the first time I was here," said James, soaking his ankles in an ice bucket and drinking a postgame smoothie. "Nothing can be worse than that." Dwyane Wade added 22 points and Michael Beasley 17 for Miami, which coasted during long stretches and never appeared threatened. Dion Waiters, the subject of trade rumours, scored a season-high 24 and Kyrie Irving had 16 for Cleveland. The Heat opened a 15-point lead in the third and responded to every spurt by the Cavs, who got within eight in the final two minutes. James outscored Clevelands starters 28-26, and except for arguing a few calls with the officials that didnt go his way, the four-time MVP and two-time champ enjoyed his visit home as he reminded Cavaliers fans what theyve been missing. After the final horn, James waved to some fans and tossed his headband and wrist bracelets into the crowd the way he always did when he played in Cleveland. "Of late, there have been some cheers here," Wade said. "At the end of the day, hes from Ohio. I think some fans are proud of that." The Cavs, who came in to the season with playoff expectations, have lost four in a row and seven of eight. Six of their 11 losses have been by more than 10 points. "Everyone else can write us off," Irving said. "But in this locker room, we believe in each other. Were going to figure this out." The atmosphere inside the arena was subdued compared to James previous trips. There was energy, but not the same anger as many Clevelanders seem to have moved on and are more concerned with the strugggling Cavs getting better than venting at James.dddddddddddd The disgust has decayed. This time it was a game, not an event. In fact, things have cooled to the point that a group of fans have started a campaign to bring back James, who can opt out of his contract and become a free agent next summer. The group handed out neon green "Come Home LeBron" T-shirts outside the arena before the game. He received the usual boos when he took the floor, but he was soon blowing kisses to fans in the seats as he recognized familiar faces and friends. Before the opening tip, James pointed toward Cavs coach Mike Brown, who nodded toward a former player who has done a lot of growing up. James started slowly, scoring just 3 points in the first quarter, which ended with the Cavs leading 28-22. He changed shoes between quarters, swapping a red pair for black ones. In different kicks, his game kicked into gear. He scored nine points in the second quarter, when the Heat turned up their defensive pressure and held the Cavaliers to 14 points on 5 of 25 shooting. "I didnt feel good early on, but once I got back into the game I started feeling better," James said. "In the second quarter I got into some good rhythm. We started knocking down some shots and I got some rebounds and steals." James seemed intent on ending his night early. He scored Miamis first eight points of the third and fed Chris Bosh for two layups. James dropped a 3-pointer and his free throw gave the Heat their biggest lead at 68-53. The Cavs came in reeling following a 30-point beatdown in San Antonio on Saturday. Adding to their disarray was a report that the club is trying to trade Waiters, who denied he asked to be moved and insists he loves playing in Cleveland. "Its just nonsense," Waiters said. "Theres been things thrown out there that havent been true at all." NOTES: James will host Thanksgiving for his teammates at his 30,000-square-foot mansion in Bath, Ohio, on Thursday. James decided to have his teammates over when he realized the team was headed to Canada to play on the day after the holiday. "Toronto doesnt celebrate Thanksgiving," he said. "It was either do it at a hotel or do it at my house. Id much rather do it at my house." ... Brown said No. 1 overall pick Anthony Bennett has been making steady progress. "Hes a young guy trying to find his way," Brown said. ... The Heat were without forwards Shane Battier (flu) and Udonis Haslam (back). TAMPA, Fla. -- Yasuhito Endo, Shinji Kagawa and Yoichiro Kakitani scored second-half goals Monday to help Japan warm up for its World Cup appearance with a 3-1 victory over Costa Rica. After Bryan Ruiz scored for Costa Rica in the 31st minute, Japan failed to take advantage of several opportunities before breaking through when Endo scored in the 60th. Kagawa put Japan ahead in the 80th minute, and Kakitani added his goal in injury time before a crowd of 7,106 at Raymond James Stadium. The teams have one more warm-up match in the United States, with Japan facing Zambia in Tampa and Costa Rica meeting Ireland in Philadelphia on Friday. Both teams open their World Cup campaigns on June 14. Japan, preparing for its fifth straight World Cup, will open against Ivory Coast in Group C, while Costa Rica meets Uruguay in Group D. Four years ago, Japan beat Cameroon and Denmark before losing on penalties to Paraguay in the knockout stage of the World Cup. In addition to facing Uruguay, Japan will play Colombia and Greece in the group stage. Italy and England complete the group that includes Costa Rica and Uruguay. Langer, the 2008 winner, had a 13-under 129 total at Newport Beach Country Club. The 56-year-old German won the season-opening event in Hawaii in January for his 19th victory on the 50-and-over tour. Kenny Perry and Chien Soon Lu were tied for second. Perry made a 15-foot eagle putt on the par-5 18th for a 65, and Lu shot 66. "I have to get off to a hot start and make birdies," Perry said. "I know hes going to be there at the end. I have to play my best when I go up against him. He doesnt make a mistake." Fred Couples, Scott Dunlap, Esteban Toledo and Jeff Hart were 10 under. Langer opened with a birdie, then made his first bogey of the tournament on his next hole. He added two more birdies on the front nine but also had another bogey. Perry also had a strange incident. On No. 9, he tried to cut the corner on the dogleg right and caught a palm tree about 37 yards from the tee box. Fortunately, the ball fell to the side of the tree. Perry hit a 4-iron layup, followed by a 9-iron to 4 feet and made the putt for par. "That holes got me," Perry said. "If I had to play a lot of holes like it, I wouldnt play much." haky start to reach 5-
DENVER - Unless the nose-diving Denver Nuggets can turn things around, theyll miss the playoff for the first time since 2003, when they got Carmelo Anthony after a 17-65 season. Things have gotten so bad that the Nuggets had to resort to seldom-used reserve Jordan Hamilton running the point during a recent 39-point drubbing at Indiana. Ty Lawson (rib), Nate Robinson (torn ACL) and even Randy Foye (banged knee) were all hurt, and Andre Miller hasnt been around the team since getting into a shouting match with first-year coach Brian Shaw on New Years Day. The Nuggets skidded into the All-Star break on a four-game losing streak, their 10-year playoff streak in serious jeopardy as they stand in 11th place in the Western Conference at 24-27, six games out of the eighth spot. While Lawson is expected back soon, Danilo Gallinari wont be coming to the rescue. The Italian sharpshooter who joined the Nuggets in the blockbuster trade that sent Anthony to New York a few years back, had a major setback in his recovery from a torn left ACL and recently required a second surgery that will sideline him until next season. He blew out his left knee last April and his absence played a big role in another first-round playoff exit after a franchise-best 57-win regular season and the subsequent departure of long-time coach George Karl, part of an exodus that included Andre Iguodala and general manager Masai Ujiri, who was replaced by Tim Connelly. Shaws first season as an NBA head coach has been trying, as evidenced by his spat with Miller, who was initially suspended two games, a punishment that was revoked so he could continue to get paid but which failed to lead to a quick resolution. Throw in the injuries and Shaws had to juggle his depleted lineup. "Ive probably gotten 10 years of experience in this first half of the season," Shaw said. "... In a way, I like to kind of go through everything. Theres a lot worse situations; were just continuing to try to work through it. A lot of guys that wouldnt be getting opportunities are getting to play now because of the injuries. So its allowing us to evaluate what we really have and discover who can get it done and who cant. "Im learning as I go. Im learning our team as we go. Im not going to make any excuses; it was the hand we were dealt and we just have to continue to work." Its not just a matter of being short-handed, however. "We havent always just taken pride and gotten mad when our man is scoring. We worry more about how many shots were getting and things that are happening on the offensive end, and I want us to have that same kind of excitement about whats going on on the defensive end," he said. Lawsons return to the floor will go a long way in curing some of these ills. "If I was Tys agent Id be smiling and feeling really good right now," Shaw said, "because it just shows how important he is to our team — not only the speed of our team and the ability to help us score, but just organizing things and giving the other guys confidence that they lack with him not being out there." Miller figures to be gone by Thursdays trade deadline as there are plenty of contenders who could use a veteran point guard with a friendly contract, but the only leverage the Nuggets might gain would presumably be if multiple teams come calling. Unless they reverse their recent slide, the Nuggets will be playing out the string for the first time in more than a decade. J.J. Hickson said that turnaround starts on the defensive end. "Offense is not the problem. We know we can score with whomever, even with Ty out," Hickson said. "Thats a big loss for us, but were the type of team that likes to get up and down, so we know that teams cant keep up with us and we like to put pressure on teams. But it all starts with defence. If you look at the top teams in the league, all of them are top five or top ten in defence, and thats not us right now." AP Sports Writer Dave Campbell contributed. Wales Shirt Football 2016 . She is off to a great start in the Navistar LPGA Classic. Johnson shot a career-best, 7-under-par 65 Thursday to take the first-round lead over teenager Lexi Thompson at the Robert Trent Jones Trails Capitol Hill complex. Johnson, a third-year pro with just US$84,809 in career earnings, has pledged to donate half of her winnings this week to the Wounded Warrior Project, which provides services to severely injured soldiers. "Thats some extra motivation," Johnson said. "Hopefully, I can keep it up and give a bunch of money to those guys." Johnson was 6 under on the back nine, including an eagle on the par-4, 389-yard 15th. She holed out a 6-iron from about 150 yards. "I was trying to land it on the front and I thought it wasnt going to be enough," Johnson said. "I was yelling at it to get up, and then it just kind of curved right in the hole, and then I was happy." The 16-year-old Thompson, no stranger to success at the Navistar LPGA Classic, is one shot back after a 6-under 66. Becky Morgan and Alison Walshe are tied for third at 65. There is a seven-way tie for fifth at 4 under that includes Yani Tseng, the worlds No. 1 player. Thompson first played the Navistar tournament as a 14-year-old amateur in 2009. She was tied for the lead after two rounds before finishing 27th. Last year, as a proofessional, she tied for 16th.dddddddddddd "I just love coming to this tournament," Thompson said. "Its one I look forward to every year." Samantha Richdale of Kelowna, B.C., was the top Canadian, four shots off the pace in a tie for 12th at 3-under 69. Charlottetowns Lorie Kane and Jessica Shepley of Oakville, Ont., were tied for 18th at 2-under 70. Adrienne White of Red Deer, Alta., and Hamiltons Alena Sharp were tied for 33rd at even-par 72. Stephanie Sherlock of Barrie, Ont., was tied for 47th at 1-over 73, and Montreals Lisa Meldrum was tied for 70th at 2-over 74. On Thursday, Thompson hit all 18 greens in regulation. Thompson finished with seven birdies, including four between Nos. 11-15. She bogeyed No. 13. "I just focused on one shot and thought about tempo," Thompson said. "If I just do that for the next three days, hopefully it will all go well." Morgan recovered from a shaky start to reach 5-under 67 and tie Walshe, who carded her best round of the season. Morgan was 2 over after five holes but was below par after nine. She birdied four of the final five holes, including the last three, and drained an 18-foot putt on No. 17. "I gave myself a good talking to and turned things around," said Morgan, who is from Wales. "There were a few choice words in there. Sometimes, I need to give myself a good kick in the bum to turn things around." MONTREAL - The Montreal Canadiens may catch a break tonight against the Washington Capitals as Alex Ovechkins game status remains uncertain for their Bell Centre match-up. Washington has played its last two games without the NHLs goal-scoring leader. The winger has 35 goals on the season and is battling a lower-body injury. TSNs John Lu reports that Ovechkin did extensive one-timers at end of his session at Saturdays morning skate. Lu reports that if Ovechkin feels good in the afternoon and during pre-game skate he should play. You can listen to the action on TSN Radio 690 beginning at 7pm et. Both clubs will be looking to snap losing streaks on Saturday night as each wraps up games on back-to-back nights. The Capitals are in the midst of a seven-game skid, dropping the last five in regulation. That has Washington now four points back of the eighth spot in the Eastern Conference. Montreal is on a less-damaging three-game slide and also has lost six of its past nine. That has left the Canadiens tied with the Toronto Maple Leafs for third place in the Atlantic Division and six points behind the co-leading Boston Bruins and Tampa Bay Lightning. Montreal is set to play two straight and six of its next seven at home after getting outscored 14-5 in losing the final three contests of a four-game road trip. The Canadiens capped the swing last night with a 4-1 setback in Detroit. Brendan Gallagher picked up the lone goal for the Canadiens, but Carey Price made just 22 saves in the setback. "Everyone is still confident in each other, its just a matter of getting to little details of the game and once you do that, the wins will start to come," Gallagher said Montreal is on its longest losing streak since dropping a season-high four in a row from Nov. 1-7 and saw Alexei Emelin depart in the latter stages of the third period on Friday night after getting hit by a shot. Things dont get any easier for the Habs in the opener of this residency as they have lost six in a row and nine of their last 12 at home to the Capitals. The Capitals were shut out 2-0 by Ottawa in their first game without Ovechkin on Tuesday, then dropped a 2-1 decision to the hosting New Jersey Devils to begin a five-game trip on Friday night. Jason Chimera provided the lone offense for the Capitals, but it didnt come until there was 9:50 left in the game. Washington has been held to one goal or fewer six times over its losing streak and is just 1-for-24 on the power play in the last eight games. Michael Neuvirth played well in defeat, making 28 saves, but the Caps failed to take advantage of the chances they had. "We had three short-handed breakaways and we didnt score," Caps coach Adam Oates lamented. "(Devils goaltender Cory Schneider) held them in and made the saves when he needed to. We made saves, too. You need execution, and the mistakes are not blatant, but its still the NHL and you get burned." Washington, on its longest losing streak since an 0-6-2 drought from Dec. 2-18, 2010, also lost center Mikhail Grabovski to a lower-body injury during the second period and he did not return. He will be a game-time decision against Montreal. The clubs split two meetings earlier this season in Washington, with the Caps winning their game in a shootout, and the Canadiens have lost nine of their last 11 overall in this series. http://www.steelersauthenticonline.com/Youth-Ernie-Stautner-Elite-Jersey/ . The touted rookie came through with an infield hit toward third after beginning the night 0 for 5 with four strikeouts in a game started by Seattle ace Felix Hernandez. Jose Altuve singled off Charlie Furbush (0-3) to open the 11th and Dexter Fowler reached on a bunt single. A sacrifice bunt by Carlos Corporan came next, and Altuve beat the throw to third to load bases for Springer. Anthony Bass (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings for the win. Marc Krauss had two hits and drove in two runs for Houston. Mike Zunino hit a two-run homer and Kyle Seager added a pair of RBIs for Seattle, which had a three-game winning streak snapped. Houston had trouble taking advantage of chances throughout the game and was 3 for 17 with runners in scoring position. Robinson Cano was initially ruled safe on a grounder with two outs in the 10th inning. But the play was challenged and overturned on replay to end the inning. The Astros tied it at 4 in the eighth when Alex Presley scored on a groundout by Jonathan Villar. Hernandez allowed five hits and three runs -- two earned -- with six strikeouts in five innings. Houston starter Brad Peacock gave up six hits and four runs while also striking out six in six innings. Michael Saunders started the sixth with a bunt single and Cano drew a one-out walk before Cory Hart singled to load the bases. Seagers two-run double came next to give Seattle a 4-3 lead.ddddddddddddSpringer had a chance to catch the ball in right field, but it bounced off his glove as he crashed into the fence near the bullpen. Springer was down on the ground as Fowler came over to retrieve the ball. Seager singled with no outs in the fifth before Zunino connected on his homer to the Crawford Boxes in left field to tie it at 2 with two outs. Hernandez plunked Jason Castro in the fifth before Krauss RBI single, on a ball that bounced right in front of the wall in right field, put Houston back on top 3-2. Krauss was out at second trying to stretch the hit into a double. Altuve had a bunt single to start Houstons third before a single by Fowler. The Astros went up 1-0 when Castro reached and Altuve scored on an error by centre fielder Abraham Almonte, who was sprinting toward the wall when the ball just eluded his glove. Krauss RBI single sent Fowler home to push the lead to 2-0. Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said Iwakuma will likely by limited to about 100 pitches. ... BOSTON -- Reilly Smith is opening a lot of eyes and scoring a lot of goals. Smith scored two goals, and Tuukka Rask made 33 saves for his fourth shutout of the season to lift the Boston Bruins to a 5-0 rout of the Ottawa Senators on Friday night. "Hes a very talented player and he gets in front of the net. Its paying off for him right now," Bruins forward Brad Marchand said. When the Bruins traded Tyler Seguin in the off-season, they received Loui Eriksson, Smith, and two other prospects. Eriksson was the marquee player in the deal, but Smith has yielded the real return thus far. Eriksson has missed time because of two concussions. "I dont think he was looked upon as a throw-in," Bruins coach Claude Julien said. "It is the first time he has been given the opportunity to play on a regular basis, and he is finally showcasing his skills. Its no fluke." Smith scored twice in the third period, giving him a team-leading 14 goals. He has five goals and two assists in the last three games. "Hes really taken that opportunity that hes been given, and is on a streak right now," Rask said. "When youre hot, youre hot, just keep shooting." Erikssons injuries opened the door for Smith to move from the third line to the second line, alongside Patrice Bergeron and Marchand, and find his groove. Smith also has 16 assists and is second on the team in points. The Bruins are 13-0-2 in their last 15 home games and have won eight straight in Boston. They havent lost there in regulation since Oct. 26. Rask (20-8-2) has allowed one goal or fewer in 15 of his 30 starts this season. After earning only 19 wins last season, he is now the third goalie with 20 NHL wins this season. Boston tied a club record, set in 1929, by having a player score two goals for the seventh straight game. Smith has done it three times. Robin Lehner made 36 saves for Ottawa, which has dropped four of five. "We were really bad. End of story," Lehner said. "Twenty good minutes and 40 bad ones. Teams are picking us apart when we arent working hard and when we arent playing hard." Jarome Iginla beat Lehner with 3:31 remaining in the second when he slammed in a rebound of Torey Krugs slap shot during a power play to make it 1-0. Ottawa dominated the first period, holding a 15-5 shot advantage, but Boston turned the tables in the second with a 20-8 edge. In addition to the 19 saves in the second period, Lehner was stung by Johnny Boychuks slap shot, but stayed in the game. "We hung Robin out to dry," Senators captain Jason Spezza said. "One step forward and one step back. We need to start playing better hockey or they arent going to let us play much longer." David Krejci put Boston ahead 2-0 with a shot from the right circle 38 seconds into the third period. "In the third, getting that early goal by Krejci was a big momentum shift," Iginla said. Marchand capped the scoring with a short-handed goal with 27 seconds remaining. The teams will complete the home-and-home series on Saturday at Ottawa. NOTES: Bruins LW Daniel Paille returned after missing seven games because of a concussion. ... Ottawa is one of three teams that has never swept Boston in a season series. ... Boston D Dennis Seidenberg sustained a lower-body injury. He wont play on Saturday. ... Bergeron added two assists for Boston, which has outscored its last three opponents 15-3. Anders Lee Jersey . A lot of guys that wouldnt be gettting opportunities are getting to play now because of the injuries.dddddddddddd So its allowing us to evaluate what we really have and discover who can get it done and who cant. GLENDALE, Ariz. - There might not be a starting goaltender controversy for the Arizona Coyotes yet, though Devan Dubnyk will at least be discussed when head coach Dave Tippett and goaltending coach Sean Burke talk about who is in goal for the Coyotes next game.Thats because Dubnyk, a six-year NHL veteran who was traded twice last season, got the call over Coyotes No. 1 goalie Mike Smith and stopped 24 shots in a 3-2 overtime win over the Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings on Saturday night.Oliver Ekman-Larrson beat Jonathan Quick with a wrist shot into the top right corner of the net on a power play with 14 seconds left in overtime, giving the Coyotes (1-1) their first win of the season. The Kings, coming off a shutout loss in their season-opening game, scored their first goals of the 2014-2015 campaign. But they fell despite taking a 2-0 lead in the first period. An apparent goal for the Coyotes Shane Doan with 2:47 left to play in regulation was waved off when Doan was called for interference. That gave the Kings a late power play, but they couldnt convert.Dubnyks save on the Kings Tyler Toffoli with 11 seconds left in regulation forced overtime.Dubnyk, 28, hadnt won a game since Jan. 10 with Edmonton, a 4-3 overtime win over Pittsburgh. Hed been told before the season opened that he would play in one of Arizonas first four games. Its nice to get an opportunity. I know my spot here so you dont know when the opportunities are going to come. So to be able to get a win like that is fun to do, Dubnyk said. Its been a roller coaster, mostly slowing down for me for a while now.Ekman-Larrson got his winner with the Coyotes on a power play after Toffoli was whistled for hooking Arizonas Martin Hanzal with 1:19 left in overtime.Quick made 37 saves in defeat for Los Angeles (0-1-1).The Kings looked poised for a win early on, as a pair of turnovers in the Arizona defensive zone led to the Kings goals. It took Los Angeles 1:32 to get on the board, with Tanner Pearson scooping a loose puck and shooting it past Dubnyk.Lauri Korpiskoski, the player guilty of losing the puck on Pearsons goal, had two good chances to score in the first seven minutes, but was turned away though the Coyotes outshot the Kings 15-10 in the first period.Los Angeles had 16 more shots over the rest of the game and was outshot 40-26 overall.Jeff Carter gave the Kings a 2-0 lead at 12:57 of the first when Michael Stones errant pass landed at his stick, and Carter had time to wind up and fire a wrist shot past Dubnyk. The Coyotes, who like the Kings were thoroughly outplayed in their season opener, a 6-2 loss to Winnipeg on Thursday, got a goal back on a power play with 39 seconds left in the first period. It came thanks to a redirection of Keith Yandles shot from the point that glanced off Antoine Vermette and past Quick. The Kings could have led by more, but Dubnyk came up with a sprawling save on Carters shot before Arizonas goal. Our whole group knew we needed to be better, Tippett said. We played well and it was a game we deserved to win.Quick came up big at 7:14 of the second when he swatted away a close-range shot from the Coyotes Rob Klinkhammer to keep the Kings in the lead, 2-1. But the Kings were caught trying to make substitutions when Mikkel Boedker streaked down the ice with the loose puck and beat Quick to tie the score.Kings coach Darryl Sutter didnt seem concerned about his teams first two performances. Its important that we played better than we did last (game), so its important that we continue to take those little steps, Sutter said.NOTES: Dubnyk got the start, even though Smith was 2-0-0 against the Kings last season and is 11-4-0-1 against them in his career and has more wins against the Kings than any other team. . Ekman-Larrson set a career high for shots in a game with eight. . Yandles two assists gave him 23 points in his career against the Kings. Mikhail Grabovski Jersey . In the previous competition, he was the best goalkeeper of the tournament. Today, was not his day ... but the defenders also did not help him.We were focused, we have to look and have to search for the reason for losing this game.Despite the Qatar errors, the UAE fully deserved the win and started well with Khalil and Mabkhout both shooting wide from close range in the opening 10 minutes. It was Qatar, however, which took the lead midway through the first half. Majed Naser blocked an initial shot from Mohammed Muntari but Khalfan Ibrahim, positioned on the edge of the area, chested the ball down and lobbed it back beautifully over the head of the retreating UAE goalkeeper. That wass as good as it got for Qatar, tipped by many as potential contender at this tournament.dddddddddddd The UAE equalized nine minutes before the break when Qasem spilled a cross and, after a scramble in a crowded area, a defensive goal-line clearance from a Khalil header bounced off the strikers chest and into the net.Khalils free kick early in the second half deceived Qasem and bounced into the far corner of the Qatari goal. Another set piece ended the game as a contest.Khamis Esmaeels well-struck free kick was parried by the Qatari goalkeeper into the path of Mabkhout, who scored into an empty net from close range. The striker added another goal in the 89th, ensuring the UAE scored four goals in an Asian Cup game for the first time.Im very happy with this win, said UAE coach Mahdi Ali. I was sure that the players would do their best and would play a good game. We worked hard for this as this was the key game for us. The first step gives players motivation and confidence for the second game ... from tomorrow we work harder. The UAE squad remains in Canberra to take on Bahrain on Thursday, when Qatar plays Iran in Sydney. Atlanta was determined not to get frozen out of winning Super Bowl bid
Days before Atlanta earned the bid to host Super Bowl LIII at the $1.4 billion Mercedes-Benz Stadium in 2019, Falcons owner Arthur Blank admitted that another owner raised concerns about how the city would handle an improbable ice storm, such as the one that hit the last time Atlanta hosted the Super Bowl (2000).
Blank's immediate response was, "I reminded him that was 16 years ago and the weather in Atlanta, due to climate changes, it's changed. So, it's beautiful now. ... We don't think that will be an issue. I understand that was 1-in-100-years kind of freak stuff."
Blank maintained his stance at Tuesday's NFL spring league meetings, during which Atlanta beat out New Orleans on the fourth ballot Wholesale Arizona Cardinals Jerseys for the 2019 game. South Florida and Los Angeles also were awarded Super Bowls in 2020 and 2021, respectively, while Tampa and New Orleans were shut out.
"Of the five cities competing, we had, traditionally, the coldest weather that time of the year," Blank noted. Wholesale Atlanta Falcons Jerseys "So it took the owners to look past that and to look to other factors that were important. And Wholesale Baltimore Ravens Jerseys I think Atlanta Falcons Jerseys the walkability of downtown, even if you have the cold weather, is a big factor -- potentially colder weather than you might find in L.A., you might find in South Florida or Tampa or whatever. But the fact that everything is walkable is a huge factor.
"I spoke to every owner short of one -- myself. They all thought [the walkability] was a major plus for Atlanta. Everything was within a quarter-, half-mile: hotel wholesale nfl jerseys rooms, all the amenities. So if the weather is not perfect, [fans] can move around and move around efficiently."
Falcons president Rich McKay said the possibility of an ice storm wasn't even something addressed in the 15-minute presentation Atlanta put together, led by bid committee spokesmen Doug Hertz and Rick Smith, the CEOs of Atlanta-based United Distributors and Equifax, respectively.
"That was a long time ago," McKay said of the game in 2000. "I think when you look at our average temperatures and when you look at the weather response that the city and the state have put together not just for the Super Bowl but for all of us that live in Atlanta, I just don't see it as a big issue. That was a once-in-50-years storm.''
But Atlanta also had a significant storm in January 2014 that led to the city being shut down. Gov. Nathan Deal said he was not satisfied with how that situation was handled.
"I think what that did was it drove us to a lot better solutions," McKay said. "We're better prepared, whether it's at the airport or whether it's on our streets. So, I don't see the weather being a factor.
"We have a retractable-roof stadium that is built to host these type of events and to deal with weather. Sometimes, the weather is going to impact the way we move around the city. In our case, it doesn't happen very often. So if it happens two times in the cheap nfl jerseys last so many years, I don't think it's a deciding factor."
What does it mean to McKay to have the Super Bowl back in Atlanta?
"It's the biggest single event probably the state of Georgia would have over a 10-year period," McKay said. "So, it's very impactful. It's impactful from a name recognition worldwide to an economic impact to everything else. It's something that, when you build a stadium, it's clearly something you want to have.'' |
