GENEVA -- The two sides of being FIFA President Sepp Blatter are on display just before the troubled World Cup kicks off on June 12. Acclaimed by world football leaders but held in contempt by many football fans. Blatter should arrive at the Itaquerao stadium in Sao Paulo to watch host Brazil play Croatia confident that this tournament -- his fifth as president -- wont be his last leading the worlds favourite sport. One day earlier, the 78-year-old Blatter should ask for, and get, consent from 209 FIFA member federation bosses to seek another four-year presidential term. "Yes, I would like to do it," Blatter said earlier this month about his expected candidacy for the secret ballot scheduled May 29, 2015. "My mandate is almost over but my mission is not finished." The endorsement at the Transamerica Expo Center might be a personal high point of Blatters stay in Brazil, a country which loves football but not the cost levied on taxpayers to stage the month-long show. When Blatter appears on a public stage he faces inevitable boos and jeers -- just as at previous World Cups and the Confederations Cup held in Brazil last June. The fact FIFA pays no tax to Brazils public finances from its $4 billion revenue for broadcasting and commercial deals tied to the 2014 World Cup is an added provocation. Even if it is a standard demand on countries wanting to host a World Cup or Olympic Games. Blatter, who often travels and is feted like a head of state, is a useful target for social activists and for football fans familiar with the corruption cases that have involved some of its senior officials in recent years. A change to usual World Cup protocol means that presidents of FIFA and the host nation will not make speeches in the stadium during the formal opening ceremony. Not after he and state President Dilma Rousseff were booed when addressing the crowd before Brazils match which opened the Confederations Cup last year in the new Brasilia stadium. "Friends of Brazilian football, where is the respect and the fair play, please?" the multilingual Blatter asked spectators in their Portuguese language, as their head of state stood beside him. So, no chance in the 65,000-capacity Sao Paulo stadium for spectators to upstage the presidents. "If you know that these things could happen, that at the end the two persons who are giving a speech will feel bad, why (do) you put them in this position?" FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke said. Still, the protocol plan calls for Blatter and Rousseff -- who faces her own re-election contest within months -- to jointly present the trophy on July 13 to the winning captain in Rio de Janeiros Maracana stadium. Four years ago, Blatter and South Africas President Jacob Zuma both had a hand on the gold trophy which they passed to Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas without any public disapproval. That came three hours earlier when the FIFA leaders name was announced as he entered the Soccer City pitch during pre-match introductions to the players. "I was only aware there were less vuvuzelas," Blatter said the next day. "We went on the field of play and it was a great moment." In 2006, Blatter skipped the on-field trophy presentation to the Italy team in Berlin. "History will say that it was an error" he acknowledged to Italian media several months later. "I wanted to avoid creating an ugly scene because the Germans had shown they would whistle at the word FIFA." Blatter should face no such disrespect on June 11 at the FIFA Congress, an event which the skilled Swiss administrator controls with mastery. In the depths of public disdain with FIFA in June 2011, Blatter was re-elected as the only candidate. He got 186 of 203 votes cast despite a turbulent few months of bribery scandals and widespread doubts about the integrity of awarding the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russia and Qatar, respectively. "We have been hit and I personally have been slapped. I dont want that ever again," Blatter said from the congress stage in Zurich, committing FIFA to a reform program which critics saw as richly ironic that he would lead. "The FIFA ship is in troubled waters but this ship must be brought back on the right track," he said before the poll. "I am the captain of the ship." When the England delegation broke ranks and tried to postpone the vote, Blatter marshalled a global spread of loyal members to march up and join a brutal verbal attack on the founding football association. Blatter can surely expect similarly support in less tempestuous times in Sao Paulo. Apart from some wealthy member nations, few of FIFAs 209 seem anxious to change a system and leadership which has let millions of World Cup dollars trickle down to them during Blatters 16-year rule. Though UEFA President Michel Platini clearly covets the top job, FIFA history since 1974 shows that a bedrock of European votes is far from enough for victory. Should Blatter continue to enjoy good health, he can look forward to a more agreeable welcome at the 2018 World Cup opening ceremony. Side by side with Vladimir Putin. "Its great to be out there grinding with the entire team and not have any restraints," Newton said. Newton fully participated in practice and threw the ball with good velocity -- although coach Ron Rivera said the fourth-year quarterbacks timing on his passes is still a bit of a concern. Wearing a thick, protective flak jacket, Newton took the majority of reps with the first team offence as expected and didnt seem to have any problems throwing, Rivera said.. Rivera said Monday he expected Newton to start against the Lions on Sunday after missing the season opener at Tampa Bay with a rib injury -- and he didnt waffle on that decision Wednesday. "We dont expect him to have anny setbacks," Rivera said.dddddddddddd Rivera said hes more confident that Newton would be able to handle a hit to the ribs this week. Derek Anderson filled in for Newton and threw for 230 yards and two touchdowns as the Panthers defeated the Buccaneers 20-14 in Week 1. Anderson returned to working with the second team unit on Wednesday. It was the first missed start for Newton since coming into the league as the No. 1 overall pick in 2011. During a press conference Wednesday Newton refused to discuss anything related to last weeks game, including the teams decision to hold him out or when he inexplicably ran on to the field during a timeout in street clothes to talk to his teammates in the huddle. "My focus is on the Lions," Newton said. "We cant dwell on the past. It was a great to get a team win but Im moving forward." LA PLAGNE, France - Alex Bilodeau ended his World Cup skiing career with a flourish. The Rosemere, Que., freestyler won the final race of the season by taking the dual moguls competition while his teammate Mikael Kingsbury of Deux-Montagnes, Que., came second but took his third straight World Cup title on Friday. "Its been an amazing ride," said Bilodeau. "Very emotional." The two-time Olympic champion had no chance to catch Kingsbury for the Crystal Globe as overall champion, but wanted to push his friend and rival to the limit in the last race of his career. Kingsbury got down the hill quicker, but the judges gave the gold medal to Bilodeau on execution. "I knew the grand prix was done and I couldnt go up or down," said Bilodeau. "I looked at Mikael and said Im really honoured to have my last run against the best in the world. "I said Ill just enjoy it. I decided to do a back double, which is something you dont do in duals. Its too risky. But I thought its my last race, Im going to go for it. " On the womens side, Hannah Kearney of the United States won a fourth straight Crystal Globe and the fifth of her career. Kearney defeated Canadas Chloe Dufour-Lapointe in the final. Her sister Justine Dufour-Lapointe had a shot at catching the American for the title, but crashed in the round of 16 and lost to Perrine Laffont of France. With his win, Bilodeau broke freestyle legend Jean-Luc Brassards record for World Cup podium finishes with his 48th, including 19 wins. "I never looked at the number of podiums," he said. "For me it was a day-to-day process of trying to be the best in the world. "Records are made to be broken. Im sure it wont last long. Mikael will break it in a year or two." The 26-year-old, who this year became the first freestyler to defend an Olympic gold medal, now plans to finish his accounting studies at Concordia University and enter the corporate world. Kingsbury, who has 38 World Cup podium finishes, said it was an emotional day for both skiers as they waited at the top of the final run of the season. "We did a big hug," said 21-year-old Kingsbury. "I told him it was an honour to be at his last run. "Then we both made amazing runs." While Bilodeau is bowing out, Kingsbury said his career is just getting started and he intends to try to stay on top through the next Winter Olympics in 2018 in South Korea. "Im still young and Ive got a lot to learn in the sport," he said. "Ive had an amazing career so far. "I never thought Id do as much as Ive done so far, but Ill work hard, get stronger in the gym. The best is still to come." The three Dufour-Lapointe sisters finished just behind Kearney in womens standings, with Justine second, Chloe third and Maxime fourth. Nike Free Run 3 Mujer Comprar . Ayon started 14 games, most coming after injuries to All-Star centre Al Horford and top backup Pero Antic. Ayons surgery on Friday was performed in Atlanta by Dr. Nike Air Max 90 Baratas Mujer . Nike Free 5.0 Mujer Precio . For the second game in a row, the Athletics won despite squandering a 4-0 lead. They also overcame a blown save by Sean Doolittle, whose streak of 26 2-3 innings ended when Miami scored the tying run in the ninth. New Balance 574 Island Pack . The Bulls will select 19th. Toronto didnt have a pick in the 2013 draft. In 2012 they finished with the same record as the Golden State, but lost the tiebreaker and selected Terrence Ross with the 8th pick (Warriors got Harrison Barnes with pick #7).LONDON - Novak Djokovic capped his incredible season by being named ITF World Champion on Tuesday, becoming the first player other than Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal to win the mens award since 2003. The 24-year-old Serb won the Australian Open, Wimbledon and U.S. Open in a stellar year in which he took over as the top-ranked player, finishing with 10 titles and a 70-6 overall record. "Starting with victory in last years Davis Cup final, this has been an almost perfect 12 months for me," Djokovic said. "I have always dreamed about becoming the best in the world, and to have won three Grand Slam titles and finished the year as No. 1 is very special." Petra Kvitova won the womens award after winning Wimbledon and leading the Czech Republic to victory in the Fed Cup, ending a breakthrough year as the second-ranked player in the world. &quuot;I will cherish this award, which is the cherry on top of a wonderful year," said the 21-year-old Kvitova, who edged out top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki — last years champion — in the voting.dddddddddddd ITF President Francesco Ricci Bitti praised Djokovic and Kvitova for having strong records individually and with their countries. "Novaks achievements this year are remarkable in such a strong era for mens tennis, while Petra has made a major breakthrough on the womens tour," Bitti said. American twins Bob and Mike Bryan were named world champions in mens doubles for the eighth time, while Kveta Peschke of the Czech Republic and Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia won the award in womens doubles. The players will receive their awards at the annual ITF World Champions dinner in Paris on June 5, during the French Open. INDIANAPOLIS -- Jacques Villeneuve is ready to make an IndyCar comeback. Schmidt Peterson Motorsports said Wednesday it has hired Villeneuve to race in this years Indianapolis 500, 19 years after the Canadian driver first drank the milk in Victory Lane. "IndyCar is growing again and thats why last year when I started watching races again, every time I watched I felt almost angry I wasnt there," the 1995 race winner said on a satellite hookup from France during a news conference held at the teams Indy headquarters. At age 42, Villeneuve seemed content being a television analyst, musician and RallyCross driver. But when Schmidt and co-owner Rick Peterson, also from Canada, made a serious offer, he couldnt refuse. The 500 is scheduled for May 25. Villeneuve certainly has a compelling resume. As an Indy rookie in 1994, he qualified fourth and finished second to Al Unser Jr., and was named the races rookie of the year. The next season, the reigning CART rookie of the year was even better. He qualified fifth at Indy, forced Scott Goodyear into a costly mistake on the final restart and eventually held off Christian Fittipaldi to become the first and only Canadian winner of the race. Villeneuve completed all 400 laps at Indy in those two starts and won the 1995 CART title, too. But after starting 33 races, winning six poles and five races in two IndyCar seasons, Villeneuve had a chance to become an international star. So he headed to Europe and joined Formula One -- the series that made his late father, Gilles, a household name. Like his dad, who died in a 1982 F1 qualifying crash, Villeneuve excelled on the world stage. In 163 career starts between 1996 and 2006, the younger Villeneuve reached the podium 23 times, won 11 races, 13 poles and claimed the 1997 world championship. At that point, American open-wheel racing wasnt even on the radar. His journey back to North America began in 2007 when Villeneuve made the move to American stock cars. Over the next seven seasons, he dabbled in Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Le Mans series as well as sports cars. Villeneuve regained interest in IndyCars last season as he watched how close and competitive the races had become. To him, it reminded him of the series he left almost two decades earlier. Suddenly, he was interested in making a return -- if he could find the right car and the right team. "To get this opportunity is a gift," Villeneuve said. "A lot of people say when you have kids, you slow down. I want my kids to see me race." Schmidt is the winningest team owner in Indy Lights history and already employs two full-time drivers in the better-known IndyCar series -- Russias Mikhail Aleshin and Frances Simon Pageland. In previous years, Schmidt has always found a way to compete at Indy. Getting Villeneuve might be the biggest coup of all for his low-budget team. "Indy is a special place. We go there not to exist but to win the race," Schmidt said. "To see a guy that finished second and finished first there, I dont think hes going to have any problem going back." Villeneuve becomes the fifth 500 winner on this years entry list. The others are three-time winner Helio Castroneves of Brazil, two-time winner Scott Dixon of New Zealand, 2000 winner Juan Pablo Montoya of Colombia and Brazils Tony Kanaan, the defending champ. Another trip to Victory Lane would give Villeneuve two more milestones. He would break Al Unsers record for the longest gap between first and last victories. Unser went 17 years between his first Indy crown in 1970 and his record-tying fourth win in 1987. Villeneuve also would break Gordon Johncocks record for the longest gap between first and second wins at Indy, 1973 and 1982. Villeneuve isnt motivated by records. He wants to win. "Im a racer," he said, explaining he does not plan to retire anytime soon. "Ive got to find ways to get better and better and better, and Im going there with a team thats very experienced and has been very successful as well." Roy Halladay Jersey . John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Harry Reid (D-Nev. Mithch Moreland Jersey . United announced the injury to the England left back on Wednesday, three days before the club begins its Premier League campaign against Swansea. Shaw, who became the worlds most expensive teenage player when he joineed United for a reported 27 million pounds ($46 million) from Southampton in June, has struggled in preseason with fitness problems.dddddddddddd With United having sold long-time left back Patrice Evra to Juventus, new manager Louis van Gaal is expected to start the season with youngster Reece James filling the left-sided berth in the Dutchmans 3-5-2 formation. The City of Hamilton announced on Monday that the Tiger-Cats new stadium will not be ready for the first two games that it was supposed to host on July 26 and 31. The Tiger-Cats, who are playing their first three games of the season on the road, were scheduled to open Tim Hortons Field against the Ottawa Redblacks on July 26. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers were to visit for the second game five days later. "After holding our home pre-season game on campus last month, we know that we can deliver an outstanding entertainment experience at McMaster," said Tiger-Cats CEO Scott Mitchell in a statement. In the coming weeks, we will have greater certainty regarding our August 16 game, but the builders remain adamant that Tim Hortons Field will be ready no later than Labour Day. While we are disappointed our fans will have to wait to visit our incredible new stadium, we know the world-class experience provided at Tim Hortons Field will exceed everyones expectations when it is complete." "There was a continuing effort to try to make a solution work and bring some solutions forward, but at the end of the day it came down to most importantly was it going to be safe, if so if they could get a temporary situation settled, what was the experience going to be like and the answer was clearly it wasnt going to be as good as we needed it to be," Mitchell later said on TSN Drive with Dave Naylor. The Ticats announced the two relocated home contests will be played at Ron Joyce Field at McMaster University in Hamilton. Last year, the Ticats played their entire season at the University of Guelph while the new stadium was under construction. In a statement, the City of Hamilton said the new building "will not be safe and ready for occupancy by (July 26 and 31)". Hamiltons next chance to open the stadium will be Saturday, August 16 against the Calgary Stampeders. Tim Hortons Field will also host the Pan and Parapan American Games next summer. In a statement, Infrastructure Ontario noted that the new stadium is 85 per cent complete and that cost overruns would be paid for privately and not by Ontario taxpayers. Wholesale Jerseys Supply . Aduriz took his first goal four minutes in when he shook his marker to head in Markel Susaetas corner kick at the near post.KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. - Maria Sharapova needed nine match points before she finally closed out a win Saturday in the third round of the Sony Open, beating Lucie Safarova 6-4, 6-7 (7), 6-2. No. 1-ranked Serena Williams won a marathon, too, taking 2 1/2 hours to eliminate Caroline Garcia 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Mens No. 1 Rafael Nadal began a bid for his first Key Biscayne title by beating Lleyton Hewitt 6-1, 6-3. Sharapova had two match points in the tiebreaker, and seven more in the final game. The No. 26-seeded Safarova stayed alive with a succession of vital winners. "She kept hitting unbelievable shots," Sharapova said. "One more. One more. I said, How many chances are you going to get?" With the capacity crowd in a frenzy, a long exchange on the final point ended with Safarova pushing a weary forehand into the net. She then shared a hug with Sharapova. The match took three hours and ended at 10 p.m. to conclude an 11-hour day session on the stadium court, with two night-session matches yet to come. "After a match like that, its tough to have only one winner," Sharapova said, "because both players give a lot and both want to win so much." Williams match was a thriller, too. A succession of long rallies left her grunting, stumbling, lunging, squealing, flailing her arms and scolding herself. Despite all the drama and trauma, she moved one round closer to a record seventh Key Biscayne title. Williams is playing in her first tournament after a monthlong layoff, and rustiness might explain her 41 unforced errors, including seven double-faults. And the 20-year-old Garcia kept Williams on her heels with deep groundstrokes and serves that topped out at 117 mph. "I can play a hundred times better," Williams said. &quoot;I really gave myself a tremendous amount of trouble out there.dddddddddddd Granted she played great, but I made so many errors ... 40-something errors. Its not the way to play professional tennis. Maybe amateur." Three-time champion Novak Djokovic was off Saturday but advanced to the fourth round anyway when his next scheduled opponent, Florian Mayer, withdrew because of a groin injury. Djokovics next match will be Tuesday. Stanislas Wawrinka bounced back from his first loss of the year by beating Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-0, 3-6, 6-3. No. 7 Tomas Berdych joined Wawrinka in the third round by beating Stephane Robert 7-6 (5), 6-1. No. 10-seeded John Isner rallied to win an all-American matchup against Donald Young, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4. Isner is back in the top 10 this week for the first time in 18 months. Sam Querrey, Ryan Harrison and Jack Sock lost second-round matches. That left Isner as the lone remaining American in the mens draw, reflecting the state of U.S. tennis. Williams and Garcia engaged in a succession of side-to-side baseline exchanges that had the stadium crowd roaring. But she finished in a hurry, serving out the final game at love with the help of consecutive aces. Reigning Wimbledon champion Andy Murray has predicted that Garcia will someday climb to No. 1, but the Frenchwoman is now 0-3 against Williams. "Its always nice to play against a big player," Garcia said. "You are working and practicing to play this match, because its in this kind of match you can learn more. But next time I prefer to win." Williams is playing for the 14th time at Key Biscayne, an hour from her home in Palm Beach Gardens. She won the event for the first time in 2002 and tied Andre Agassis record of six titles last year. SAN DIEGO -- The best score belonged to Stewart Cink. The best round belonged to Pat Perez. Tiger Woods didnt come close to claiming either Thursday in the Farmers Insurance Open, where the seven-time champion failed to break par in the opening round for first time in his career. Cink ran off three straight birdies late in his round on the easier North Course at Torrey Pines for an 8-under 64. That gave him a one-shot lead over Gary Woodland, who also was on the North, which is more than 600 yards shorter. Perez was on the South Course, host of the 2008 U.S. Open and with greens so firm this year that it felt like a major. Perez had a 67, the best score on the South by two shots, and even more astounding is that he played bogey-free. The South played nearly four shots harder than the North. Woods, making his 2014 debut, failed to birdie any of the par 5s and had to settle for a 72. "Even par is not too bad, but I didnt play the par 5s worth a darn today," Woods said. "Obviously, thats (tantamount) to try to get any kind of scoring on the South Course. Youve got to take care of the par 5s because theres not a lot of holes you can make birdie here. Subsequently, I didnt finish under par." Even at eight shots behind, he wasnt worried about a chance to win at Torrey for the ninth time -- including a U.S. Open. The courses are so different than its difficult to gauge where anyone stands until everyone has had a crack at both courses. The weekend rounds are on the South. "Im going to have to go out there and get it a little bit tomorrow to not be so far behind come Saturday or Sunday," Woods said. Cink did what he was supposed to do. The rough is up on the North, too, so it was important to get the ball in play. He did that, allowing him to take on some pins. "You want to really take advantage of the North Course because it will yield to you a little bit, and the South Course will not," Cink said. "I did a great job of going out there, just playing shot-by-shot, not really getting too caught up in, I have to birdie these holes. As a consequence, I actually made a few birdies and it felt great." Phil Mickelson, meanwhile, felt awful. He was coping with a back locked up on him, unusual for Mickelson because he doesnt have a history of back pain. It got so bad at one point that Mickelson thought about withdrawing from his hometown event, especially after his 4-iron on the par-5 18th at the North Course nearly went out-of-bounds. Mickelson used his short game to make birdie, and then made another birdie on the next hole and he scratched out a 69. "Never thought about not starting, but around the turn I thought about maybe taking this week off and seeing if I could get a little bit better," he said. "I kind of fought through the back nine and gave myself a chance." He described it as a muscular problem and was hopeful treatment would help. Mickelson swung easy on the North. Players have to swing for the fences on the 7,698-yard South Course, where the average score Thursday 74.45. Not many would have predicted a 67 on the South, though Woods wasnt surprised when he heard who did it. "Why? He grew up here," Woods said. "This was his home course. Hes playing it more times than any tour pro certainly." Perez has such a history at Torrey that his father, Tony, continues to announce the players on the first tee at the South Course. And heres even better history -- Perez won a Junior World Championship at Torrey Pines, by beating some Orange County kid named Tiger Woods. "Best day of my life," Perez said. "Ive known him forever. Hes always been great to me. He gives me advice here and there, but to beat him that year was fantastic. ... Ive got to hold onto that, so thats about all that I got over him. But it hurts him. Ill you tell, it hurts him." Perez was joking. He is full of bluster and always fun, a favourite among the players. Thats what made Thursday so enjoyable. The weather was close to perfect, with hang gliders filling the sky left of the fourth fairway on the South. Perez had no bogeys on his card, and he cant remember if that ever happened since the South was stretched out to prepare for the U.S. Open. It was only one round, but it was a great for Perez -- and for Cink, who hasnt won since his British Open title at Turnberry in 2009. The test for Cink is Friday on the South, especially considering that only three players broke 70 on the South -- Perez, Charley Hoffman (another San Diego native) and rookie Kevin Tway, whose father (former PGA champion Bob Tway) won this event in 1986. Ottawas Brad Fritsch opened with a 3-under 69. Graham DeLaet of Weyburn, Sask., carded a 70. David Hearn of Brantford, Ont., shot an even par 72. Riley Wheeldon of Comox, B.C, who qualified on Monday, signed for a 4-over 76. Mike Weir of Brights Grove, Ont., was another shot back. DIVOTS: Jordan Spieth, who missed the cut at Torrey Pines last year as a 19-year-old making his pro debut, played with Woods and Jimmy Walker and shot 71. ... Fifty of the 62 rounds under par were on the North Course. ... The worst score on the North Course was a 77 by Brandt Snedeker and Derek Ernst. Nike Air Max 2016 Hvid . VANCOUVER - The B.C. Lions signed receiver Courtney Taylor and defensive tackle Eric Taylor to contract extensions Friday. Both players are under contract to the CFL club through next season. "Courtney and Eric are significant contributors on the field and respected leaders in the dressing room," Wally Buono, the Lions GM and vice-president of football operations, said in a statement. Courtney Taylor enters his third CFL season after registering 61 catches for 774 yards and five TDs last year. Eric Taylor begins his fourth season with the Lions and had 35 tackles and five sacks in 2013. "Courtney and Eric are integral to the overall success of our club," Lions head coach Mike Benevides said. "Their talent and leadership are of vital importance and Im thrilled to have them sign extensions with the club." Santi Cazorla Jersey . The mixed zone is not a place to make friends. Aaron Ramsey Arsenal Jersey .ca MLB Power Rankings, ahead of the Toronto Blue Jays and San Francisco Giants. The As have scored 296 runs -- most in baseball -- while allowing 181, the fewest in baseball.LONDON -- For many observers, Arsenal needed to beat a major rival to prove its worthiness as a title contender in the English Premier League. The team responded with a thrilling performance and two superb individual goals from Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey, beating Liverpool 2-0 and moving five points clear at the top of the table on Saturday. Cazorlas goal to open the scoring was a symbol of Arsenals determination and resolve to prove their critics wrong. Mikel Arteta released Bacary Sagna down the right in the 19th minute and the full backs excellent cross was headed firmly onto the post by Cazorla. The Spanish midfielder didnt give up, collecting the rebound and volleying into the upper left corner. Arsenal sealed the victory in the 59th when Ramsey received a clipped pass from Mesut Ozil, dribbled forward and patiently waited for the ball to bounce up in front of him before unleashing a thunderous shot that dipped over the outstretched hand of Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet. "It was an important win for the team, for the club," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said. "I dont think anyone will dispute we deserved to win today." The match was a big test for Arsenal because critics believed the team moved to the league summit against relatively easy opposition. Liverpool was in second place going into the match and now sits third, behind Chelsea on an inferior goal difference. In their previous two home games, the Gunners faced strong opposition and lost both games -- to Borrussia Dortmund in the Champions League group stage and to Chelsea in the League Cup. After those defeats, some said Arsenal would wither against its main rivals like Liverpool. "We needed to respond today," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said. "It was important to convince people that you can win the big games and to do in a convincing fashion." Wenger was especially pleased with the clean sheet and how the team defended, shutting down the dangerous strike partnership of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge. "Our defensive performance was outstanding," he said. Arsenals league foorm has been stellar since losing the opening match to Aston Villa, with the London club winning eight and drawing one.dddddddddddd. Up until Cazorlas goal, the teams were engaged in a midfield battle and neither gained a foothold in front of 60,000 spectators at Emirates Stadium. Liverpool pressed high up the pitch, but Arsenal managed to stifle the visitors rhythm and was content to build from the back. Cazorlas goal invigorated Arsenal and the home team began to surge forward. The midfielder nearly scored a second but a flying save from Mignolet denied him. Sturridge had the only meaningful chance of the first half for the visitors, but his weak, 20-yard shot was easily caught by Wojciech Szczesny. But Liverpool started the second half brightly, with Suarez creating danger on several occasions. Liverpool had a chance for a late consolation goal, but Suarez chose to shoot across the face of goal instead of setting up strike partner Sturridge at the far post and the Uruguayans effort missed. "It was a game they (Arsenal) deserved to win," Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said. "They had the greater control. Were disappointed with the two goals we conceded." Rodgers only grievance was a chance in the first half. Suarez took a quick free kick after being fouled by Sagna, which released Sturridge, who crossed to Jordan Henderson for an easy tap-in. But the referee disallowed the goal, pulled play back and cautioned Sagna. The Liverpool manager spoke after the match with the referee, who told him he had to stop play to book Sagna. "I dont agree with it, but overall I thought the referee did a good job," Rodgers said. Arsenals next two fixtures are tough ones, away matches against Dortmund and Manchester United. Midfielder Jack Wilshere missed Saturdays match with an inflamed ankle and it wasnt clear if he would be ready for Wednesdays clash against Dortmund. Liverpool was missing right back Glen Johnson. He had to pull out of the match about a half hour before the team was to be named and was taken to a hospital with an unspecified illness, Rodgers said. BOYLE, Alta. -- An Olympic curling champion is breathing a sigh of relief after RCMP in Boyle, Alta., recovered his championship ring from the 2014 Sochi Games. The ring belonging to Brad Jacobs was stolen from a motel room while Jacobs was taking part in a charity golf tournament last weekend. Late Thursday, RCMP announced the engraved ring had been recovered and a 22-year-old woman from High Prairie, Alta., was in custody. Cpl. John Spaans said a 22-year-old man from Calling Lake, Alta., was being sought. Spaans said the two suspects were identified as the result of tips from the public and video surveillance. He said other personal items belonging to Jacobs and another theft victim were also recovered. "The number of tips we received from the public during the course of this investigation was tremendous," said Sgt. Kevin McGillivray. "This theft was solved by a community pulling together saying we wont stand for this type of behaviour." Jacobs had been heart-broken about the theft, saying he had hoped to someday pass the ring down to his children. He had pleaded with the thieves to give it back. INDIANAPOLIS -- Robert Mathis never got to see Deacon Jones take down opposing quarterbacks in person. He learned to appreciate Jones creativity over time. The Colts Pro Bowl linebacker and newly crowned sacks champion was honoured Thursday as the inaugural winner of the NFLs Deacon Jones Award, which goes to the leagues sacks leader. Mathis will be recognized at the NFL award banquet Feb. 1. "Deacon Jones is the creator of the sack, so to be able to win the first award in his honour is an honour," Mathis told reporters in Indianapolis. "Im very proud that I was able to win it and I thank my teammates, mainly the d-line, who were very instrumental in helping me get to the quarterback." League officials named the award after Jones died June 3 at age 74. Jones was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1980. Mathis has been one of the leagues top sack artists since joining the Colts as a fifth-round draft pick in 2003. For nearly a decade, Mathis and Dwight Freeney were among the NFLs most feared pass-rushing tandems. But when Freeney left in free agency during the off-season, the critics contended Mathis would struggle without his longtime teammate and close friend. Instead, Mathis used it as motivation. When asked Thursday why he has played so well over the years, Mathis responded: "The fact that I do have a chip on my shoulder every time I play. When people say you cant do something, you want to show them that you can." So the 32-year-old who is in his second season as a rush linebacker delivered the best season of his career. He broke Freneeys franchise record for sacks in a season (16) with 19 1/2 and became the Colts career sacks leader (111), surpassing Freeneys previous mark (107 1/2). Mathis finished the regular season with 65 tackles, matched his career high with eight forced fumbles -- two of which led to safeties -- and helped lead the Colts to their first AFC South title without Peyton Manning. Indy (11-5) will host Kansas City (11-5) on Saturday afternoon in a wild-card game. Mathis, who was the sacks leader most of the season, even came up with two sacks in the regular-season finale to move past St. Louis Robert Quinn and join Freeney as the only Colts players to win a sacks title. Freeney took that honour in 2004. Tinsley, a 10-year veteran, spent the last two seasons in Utah, where the point guard averaged 3.LOS ANGELES -- The interim CEO of the Los Angeles Clippers testified Tuesday that coach Doc Rivers told him he will quit if Donald Sterling remains the owner of the team. CEO Richard Parsons testified at a trial to determine whether Sterlings wife, Shelly, can sell the team for $2 billion to former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer as the NBA looks to force Donald Sterling from the league over racist statements. "Doc is troubled by this maybe more so than anybody else," Parsons said about Rivers, who is black. "If Mr. Sterling continues as owner, he does not want to continue as coach." Parsons said he fears there would also be an exodus of key players, including team captain Chris Paul, who heads the NBA players union. The judge stopped Parsons from giving an account of his conversations with Paul when an NBA lawyer objected over privacy issues. Parsons is a former chief executive at Time Warner and Citigroup who took over leadership of the Clippers in May during the media blitz surrounding the banishment of Sterling. Under questioning by Ballmers lawyer, Parsons said the departure of Rivers would "accelerate the death spiral" of the Clippers. "If Doc were to leave, that would be a disaster," Parsons said. "Doc is the father figure, the one who leads." The discussion of Clippers players and coaches is new territory for the trial that has mostly explored the dealings between the Sterlings. It wasnt immediately clear what effect the new information might have on the narrow question under consideration -- whether Shelly Sterling can sell the team under the family trust. Messages left for team officials seeking comment from Rivers werent immediately returned. Parsons, who is considered an expert in the management of major corporations, said he was certain that big corporate sponsors would pull out and season ticket holders would demand their money back if Donald Sterling remains the owner. &quuot; If your coach leaves, if your players dont want to play with you, what do you have?" Parsons asked.dddddddddddd "If your sponsors leave and the fans leave, its going to spiral down and down." Parsons also said he doesnt believe that anyone will offer as much money for the team as Ballmer. That opinion was seconded by witness Anwar Zakkour, an investment banker who helped broker the deal for Ballmers purchase and said he never expected a bid so big. Explaining why Ballmer would have bid over the value of the team, Zakkour said, "It was a trophy asset." "This is the highest price ever achieved for a sports team," he said. "However way you count it, this is an amazing price that anyone should be satisfied with." Parsons and Zakkour said that if the NBA seized the team and put it up for auction, the price would drop because there would be less certainty about the teams future. Outside court, Sterlings lawyer, Bobby Samini, said the billionaire would persist in his opposition to the sale because "he feels he was wronged" by the NBA. "He has no desire to destroy the team," Samini said. "He is fighting to protect his rights." Later Tuesday, Sterling fired off another legal volley, filing a new lawsuit against his wife, the NBA and league Commissioner Adam Silver that alleges fraud, breach of contract, unfair business practices and infliction of emotional distress. He claimed, among other things, that he was tricked into being examined by psychiatrists to establish whether he was mentally competent. The high-stakes financial fight centres on whether Shelly Sterling was authorized to make a deal with Ballmer on behalf of the Sterling Family Trust. Outside court, Shelly Sterlings lawyer, Pierce ODonnell, said Donald Sterling is being driven by "a perverted egotism." "Right now, were in the grips of Donald Sterlings craziness," he said. INDIANAPOLIS - Klay Thompson seized the moment twice Tuesday night. With a victory seemingly slipping away late in the third quarter, his quick scoring flurry helped Golden State regain control early in the fourth. Then, when it seemed the Warriors wouldnt be able to hold off Indianas late charge, he knocked down a 12-foot turnaround jumper with 0.6 seconds to go, giving the Warriors a rare 98-96 victory in Indianapolis. "Well take any win we can get in this building," Thompson said. "This team is real good here. Theyre the best in the NBA (at home). To come here and get a win, its huge, especially on this road trip." Thompson was terrific in his dramatic closing act. He started the quarter by making his first three shots and finished with 16 of his 25 points over the final 12 minutes — none bigger than the baseline fadeaway he hit over George Hill. For the Warriors (37-24), it was a monumental victory. They have won five of six and are 6-2 since the All-Star break. They have matched last seasons road victory total (19), the first time theyve achieved the feat in back-to-back seasons since 1970-71 and 1971-72, and they snapped a six-game losing streak in Indy that dated to Feb. 5, 2007. The victory also gives Golden State the distinction of being the only team in the league this season with wins at Miami, the two-time defending league champion, and at Indiana, which owns the leagues best record and best home record (29-4). The Warriors can thank Thompson for bailing them out after blowing a 13-point lead with less than 6 1/2 minutes to go. "He was great," Golden State coach Mark Jackson said. "Hes durable and you take him for granted. Hes a guy whos never missed a game. He was big-time." It was a stinging loss for the Pacers (46-14), who had won five straight and could have clinched a playoff spot in front of a sellout crowd. Paul George had 12 points and eight rebounds in the first quarter. He finished with 26 points and 12 rebounds, missing a potential go-ahead 3-pointer with 23.9 seconds left and the 29-foot buzzer beater that would have won it as he fell into the scorers table. David West had 27 points and seven rebounds. Yet the leagues top-ranked defence allowed Golden State to shoot 44 per cent from the field and make 10 of 20 3s — the latest uncharacteristic showing against the NBAs third-best team in defending the arc. The only good thing was that the Pacers didnt lose any ground in the chase for the top seed in the East. Theyre still two games ahead of Miami after the Heat lost at Houston. But West knows the Pacers cant continue to rely on beating up bad teams and cranking up the intensity when necessary. "Mentally, weve got to be way tougher than we are because its time, you know, its just time," West said. "Its just not something that you can just say a week before the playoffs, say, OK. Youve got to work your way into it. But as a group, its time. Weve got a tough three-game trip coming up and its just time." The Warriors sure made things tough on the Pacers. They took a 10-8 first-quarter lead and didnt give it up until Lance Stephenson scored on a layup that made it 56-54 with 7:29 left in the third. Golden State started pulling away again with an 8-0 run late in the third, then fended off another Indiana spurt that got the Pacers to 73-70 after three. Thats when Thompson got involved. After making two free throws, he hit an 18-footer, a 3 and a 16-footer to give Golden State an 84-74 lead. When he hit his third 3 with 6:23 to go, the lead was 92-79 and the Pacers appeared to be doomed. "They caused us to protect the basket, which was a chain reaction to kick the ball out and shoot open 3s," George said. Indiana came right back. West, George and Roy Hibbert accounted for all the points in a 12-0 run that suddenly tied the score at 94 with 2:13 to go. But the Warriors regained the lead on David Lees layup and, after George tied it at 96 with 1:06 left, he missed an open 3. Thompson then hit the go-ahead basket and the Warriors celebrated as Georges potential winner was short. "It felt great. To hit that shot, Im not going to lie, it felt great," Thompson said. "I proved to people I can make that shot and I wanted that shot." NOTES: Stephen Curry had 19 points for the Warriors but did not score in the fourth quarter. ... It was just one of many highlights by Nedovic, who outplayed Tony Parker on Sunday in Serbias 77-65 victory over France at the European basketball championships. That dunk gave Serbia its biggest lead of 14 points midway through the fourth quarter. With France cutting the gap, Nedovic nailed a big 3-pointer that gave his team a secure 10-point lead with 2:28 left in the game. The win gave Serbia first place in Group E, with both teams having already qualified for the quarter-finals. Lithuania took second, France third and Ukraine fourth place. Nedovic, a shooting guard headed for the Golden State Warriors in the NBA, finished with 17 points and upstaged Parker, the San Antonio Spurs star, who was held to 10 points. "He is a great player and it was our team effort that stopped him," said Nedovic, who went 5-for-8 from 3-point range and had 14 of his points in the second half. Centre Nenad Krstic finished with 19 points while two other Serbia big men, Djordje Gagic and Vladimir Stimac, combined for 16 points and 11 rebounds. Serbia overcame 48-per cent shooting from the foul line. "They were more aggressive, they put us under pressure and they have bigger men, Krstic was big inside," France forward Nicolas Batum said. Batum was one of four France players with 12 points. Earlier, Sacha Massot had a key block and a dunk late in the game to help give Belgium a 60-56 victory over Latvia that sent Ukraine into the quarter-finals. Ukraine needed the help, too, as it then lost 70-63 to Lithuania in a later game. Latvia needed to win and have Lithuania beat Ukraine to advance. "We beat Belgium by one point on a 3-point play with two seconds left in our first game of the tournament and they did us a favour today," Ukraine ccoach Mike Fratello said.dddddddddddd Croatia, Slovenia and Italy have already advanced from Group F, which ends play Monday. Spain, Greece and Finland are in the running for one remaining slot. Massot blocked a Janis Blums layup and then dunked for a 59-56 lead that completed a 9-0 Belgium run. Dairis Bertans missed a 3-point attempt and Wen Mukubu made one of two free throws to complete the scoring. Massa led Belgium with 14 points, four rebounds and three blocks. Latvia, which shot 29 per cent from the field, had a chance to win late despite trailing most of the game but Rolands Freimanis botched an alley-oop attempt. Latvia got the ball back thanks to Axel Hervelles turnover but Massot blocked Blums drive. Latvia made only 5 of 29 3-point attempts despite relying on long-range shooting as its biggest weapon. Mukubu had 13 points and Hervelle added 10 and seven rebounds in Belgiums only second-round win. Lithuanias Linas Kleiza nailed a 3-pointer for a decisive 67-63 lead with 1:03 remaining. He also made a free throw and Donatas Motiejunas made two as Lithuania scored the last six points of the game. "They made the big shots when they had to," Fratello said, while praising his team for its effort even though it had already qualified before the game. "They could focus on trying to win to move up in the standings. It didnt happen but they showed they deserved to be here." Kleiza finished with 15 points, while Sergii Gladyr had 18 for Ukraine. Pooh Jeter added 10 points and eight assists. "We didnt expect to get this far, but we are young and ambitious and we go out and play hard," Gladyr said. Ukraine, which will host the next European championship in two years, is in the quarter-finals for the first time. "Ukraine has improved a lot, they play very good basketball," Lithuania coach Jonas Kazlaukas said.
