Santa Clara, CA - Erick Torres notched his 11th goal of the season on Wednesday and it was enough to lead Chivas USA to a 1-0 win over the San Jose Earthquakes at Buck Shaw Stadium. Torres struck in the 53rd minute after San Jose was unable to clear a cross Mauro Rosales, while Dan Kennedy and the Chivas defense made the goal hold up to give the Goats seven points from their last three matches. San Jose, meanwhile, has now lost three straight games by a 1-0 score, and the team will be happy to get forward Chris Wondolowski back from World Cup duty as soon as possible. Yannick Djalo was the most dangerous man on the field for either side in the first half as he forced Kennedy into a decent save after 15 minutes before narrowly missing the near post with a well-struck volley shortly before the break. Chivas didnt muster a lot in the attacking third in the first half, but the breakthrough came in the 53rd when Torres pounced on a clearance attempt from a Rosales cross to beat goalkeeper Jon Busch. San Jose had chances to equalize over the final 10 minutes, yet Kennedy denied a good header from Ty Harden before surviving close calls from Djalo and Jean- Baptiste Pierazzi, whose rebound attempt on a scramble in front of goal was blocked by the Chivas defense. Marco Delgado wasted an opportunity to put the match away in the closing minutes for Chivas after being set up by Leandro Barrera as he fired the ball over an open net, although the mistake didnt prove costly. A two-sport standout in his senior year of high school, Larkin went to the University of Michigan on a scholarship to play defensive back for Schembechlers Wolverines. ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Up three goals in the first period against the worst team in the Western Conference, the Minnesota Wild appeared to be rolling to an easy win. However, the Edmonton Oilers refused to roll over. The Oilers scored twice in the final 9 minutes of regulation to force overtime, then completed their comeback when Taylor Hall scored in the fourth round of the shootout to lift Edmonton to a 4-3 victory over the Wild on Tuesday night. "We got really complacent when we were up 3-0," the Wilds Zach Parise said. "Just (a) lack of energy on the bench even when we were up 3-0. You could just sense, even though we were up 3-0, we werent feeling good. We played with no intensity, no urgency." Minnesota now holds a three-point lead over Dallas for the No. 7 spot in the Western Conference, with Phoenix just a point behind the Stars. The Stars and Coyotes both won on Tuesday, making the Wilds loss sting a bit more. Zach Parise, Jared Spurgeon, and Jason Pominville scored in 4-minute, 16-second span of the first period to put the Wild up 3-0. But they missed other key opportunities to put the game away, including a 5-on-3 power play midway through the second period and another man advantage late in regulation that extended into overtime. "I thought that we were a little bit lucky to be up 3-0. You could tell that we werent on it right away," Wild coach Mike Yeo said. "We addressed it, we talked about it, but we werent able to find it. Youre obviously playing with fire when youre doing that." Jeff Petry got the Oilers on the scoreboard about 90 seconds after the Wilds flurry, and David Perron and Jordan Eberle scored in the third period to tie it. Andrew Ference had two assists. Viktor Fasth finished with 28 saves through overtime to help Edmonton win for the third time in four games. "Im proud of them. It wouldve been real easy to pack it in, call it a night and get on to the next game, but our guys refused to do it," Oilers coach Dallas Eakins said. "They just kept scrapping and clawing and its tough against a team like that." In the shootout, Hall beat Darcy Kuemper with a forehand after each team scored in the first two rounds. Fasth stopped two straight shots before Hall slipped the game-winner between Kuempers pads. "Its been a while since Ive taken a shootout shot. I was kind of panicking a bit, but (EEberle) told me he thought five-hole would be there, and sure enough, fake shot, five-hole," Hall said.dddddddddddd "It was good to see that one go in." Mikael Granlund had a pair of assists for the Wild, who have lost three straight, including the last two in shootouts. Parise opened the scoring on the power play, taking a pass from Granlund and beating Fasth with his own rebound for his 22nd goal of the season with 9:53 left in the first. Minnesota doubled its lead when Spurgeons slap shot from the right point hit Oilers defenceman Justin Schultz in the leg and deflected past a screened Fasth with 6:14 to go. Pominville made it 3-0 with 4:37 left in the first when he scored his team-leading 24th of the year off a feed from Granlund, who had chased down a loose puck behind the net. Petry then fired a shot from the right corner that hit traffic in front of the net and skipped past Kuemper with 3:05 left in the period to get Edmonton on the board. The Wild controlled the pace for most of the second period, but they couldnt beat Fasth, who held them at bay during an extended 5-on-3 power play when Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Ryan Smyth were each called for hooking within 36 seconds. Parise said the Wilds struggles on the power play were frustrating, "but it goes way beyond that. If youre up 3-0, you cant give up three straight." Perron tipped in Ferences pass for his team-leading 24th goal with just under 9 minutes to play in the third to cut Minnesotas lead to 3-2. Eberle tied it with 4:53 to go in regulation, scoring off a long rebound given up by Kuemper. Ference fired the puck into the Minnesota zone from centre ice, but Kuemper could not control the carom. Eberle beat Ryan Suter to the puck in the high slot and slipped a wrist shot past Kuemper for his 21st goal of the year. Edmontons Matt Hendricks took a 2-minute minor with 8.7 seconds left in regulation when he inadvertently shot the puck into the crowd in his defensive zone. But the Oilers killed off the penalty, and Parise later hit the post as the Wild failed to put the game away. NOTES: Wild F Matt Cooke played in his 1,000th NHL game. DALLAS -- The Stars have their first win of 2014. Ryan Garbutt had a goal and two assists as Dallas snapped a six-game losing streak with a 5-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night. "Were pretty happy with that one," Garbutt said. "We got some tough breaks in the little slide here, and I think tonight we got some breaks and bounces." Jamie Benn scored a rare power-play goal for the Stars, who had not won since New Years Eve. They entered 29th in the NHL with the man advantage. Benn also assisted on the first goal of the game by Erik Cole, just 14 seconds in. Cody Eakin and Trevor Daley each had a goal and an assist for Dallas, which built a 4-1 lead 1:10 into the second period. "Not a good way to start the game," Edmonton coach Dallas Eakins said. "Going through the game in my end, it seemed like we made three mistakes and they ended up in our net and you cant recover." The final Stars goal came on Daleys shot into an empty net in the last minute. Justin Schultz and Sam Gagner scored for Edmonton, with Taylor Hall assisting on both goals. After the opening faceoff, Daley skated in from the left side, drawing goalie Ilya Bryzgalovs attention. Daley then passed across to Cole, who swept the puck into the open right side. Edmonton tied it at 3:20 when Hall passed to Schultz in the lower right circle. He skated across the front of the net and flipped the puck over Dallas goalie Kari Lehtonen, who finished with 31 saves. Garbutts third goal in two home games against Edmonton gave the Stars a 2-1 lead at 8:35 of the first. "To get that goal right away was important," Stars coach Lindy Ruff said. "Obviously, if you sit right there at 1-1, a lot of things can happen." A pregame talk between Ruff and Garbutt seemed to help. "I had a conversation with him again about some plays in the previous game that I didnt like," Ruff said. "I thought Ryans play was excellent. Tonight might have been one of his best." Benns power-play goal followed less than 2 minutes later. Tyler Seguin passed from the top of the right circle to Benn on the left. His drive beat Bryzgalov. It was only the seventh goal at home with a man advantage in 81 opportunities for Dallas this season. Overall, the Stars entered with a 12.4 per cent success rate (20 for 161). "Tyler made a great play and (Benn) a great shot. Weve had that same look a few times and havent scored," Ruff said. "Hopefully, that leads to better times ahead for the power play." Dallas fourth goal came at 1:10 of the second by Eakin. Antoine Roussel sent a centring pass to Eakin from the right corner. The Oilers controlled play for most of the second period but came away only with Gagners goal. He got the puck in the crease after Lehtonen got tangled up with Daley. On Sunday, the 21-year-old Florida got one on her home turf with a back-nine charge in the Airbus LPGA Classic. "Its very sweet," Korda said. "Finally on U.S. soil and somewhat close to Florida. I definitely wish that I could have at least shared it with my parents, but I know that theyre watching. My brothers playing a tennis tournament right now and my sisters trying for a U.S. Open qualifier, so were kind of scattered all over the place, but I cant wait to go home and share this with them." Korda, whose father, Petr, won the 1998 Australian Open tennis tournament and mother, Regina Raichrtova, also played pro tennis, birdied four of the final five holes, making a breaking 15-foot birdie putt on the par-4 18th for a 7-under 65 and a one-stroke victory over Anna Nordqvist. Korda played the back nine in 6-under 30 to finish at 20-under 268 on The Crossings course at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trails Magnolia Grove complex. "It just sets up great for my game," said Korda, who shot 20 under in this event last year and tied for second. "I can be aggressive. I can read the greens. My confidence just was rising every single day. I just love it here. I love Alabama, I love this golf course, and hopefully well have this tournament for a very, very long time." Nordqvist also birdied the 18th and finished with a 69. Michelle Wie, 18-year-old Charley Hull and 44-year-old Catriona Matthew tied for third at 18 under. Wie and Hull shot 67, and Matthew had a 69. Wie played alongside Korda and Hull. "I love playing with Korda," Wie said. "Its also really great playing with Charley as well, too. You feel old but it was a lot of fun." Wie, the winner last month in Hawaii,, has seven top-10 finishes in 10 starts this year.dddddddddddd "I knew I needed a low score," Wie said. "I got hot starting on and just didnt quite get it together on the back nine, but still I shot 5 under today and theres really nothing I can do. Im just really happy for Korda. I had a lot of fun playing with her and I knew I needed a low number and I just didnt hit it low enough." Korda started the day three strokes behind 54-hole leader Nordqvist and managed only one birdie on the front nine. "Yesterday was a little frustrating because I was always around the hole and same thing actually on the front nine, watching Michelle make putt after putt after putt and mine were just kind of missing," Korda said. "I was like, OK, its time to drop now. Then they started dropping on the back nine. It was a really relaxed day, so I really enjoyed the walk." She birdied Nos. 10 and 12 to join a six-way tie for the lead, with three more players just one shot off the pace in the birdie-fest. "Charley was making birdies, Michelle was making birdies and everybody behind us was making birdies, so I knew I had to keep making birdies," Korda said. Korda broke out of that logjam with a curling downhill birdie putt at the 14th hole, then took the lead for good with a 25-foot birdie on No. 15. She protected that small lead with a birdie at the par-5 16th and her closing birdie on the 18th. "That last putt broke really hard," Korda said. "I probably played it about a yard out and I was just trying to get it down there close and it went in. I have not played well since I won in the Bahamas but Ive been working hard and it finally paid off here." Second-ranked Stacy Lewis had a 71 to tie for 10th at 15 under. She needed a solo third or higher to take the top spot in the world from Inbee Park. HOUSTON -- James Harden faced the throng of reporters waiting at his locker and exhaled heavily after the Houston Rockets slipped by the New York Knicks on Friday night to end a two-game skid. "Its a huge sigh of relief," Harden said. "We found a way. It wasnt pretty. It wasnt the prettiest win, but at the end of the night a win is all that matters." Harden scored 37 points and Aaron Brooks made a pair of free throws with 17 seconds left to lift the Rockets to a 102-100 victory. The Knicks had a chance to tie it at the end, but Iman Shumpert missed a shot before Andrea Bargnani grabbed a rebound and dished it to Beno Udrih, whose running jump shot rolled in and out of the basket at the buzzer. Several Knicks put their hands on their heads in disbelief as they watched the ball spin out. Udrih and J.R. Smith both missed 3-pointers for the Knicks with under a minute remaining. Brooks grabbed the rebound on the second one and was fouled by Udrih to set up the game-winning free throws. Smith admitted after the game that he made a mistake in taking his shot, which came with 19.9 seconds remaining. "Honestly I thought we were down two when I shot the ball," Smith said. "I started hearing Tyson (Chandler) say: "No, no, no dont take the shot." But at that point it was already released ... it was just bad basketball IQ by me." Carmelo Anthony couldnt believe they had another play where they should have held the ball instead of taking an ill-advised shot. In a game last month against Milwaukee, Bargnani jacked up a 3-point attempt with 11.9 seconds left and New York up by two points in overtime. The Bucks made a shot on the other end to force a second overtime, but the Knicks were able to rebound for a double-overtime win in that one. "Yeah, yeah, it was kind of like deja vu," Anthony said when asked if that play reminded him of Smiths shot. New York coach Mike Woodson said Smiths miss was just one of many opportunities they didnt take advantage of Friday night. "We had our shots and I think we compounded it too by fouling instead of making them go through our defence," he said. Shumpert, who scored a career-high 27 Thursday night, led the Knicks with 26 and Anthony added 25. Anthony returned on Thursday night after missing three games with a sprained left ankle and tweaked it late in that win. He was still struggling with it Friday night, and winced almost every time he landed after jumping in the second half. "I think it was just the back-to-back and not giving it a chance to rest," Anthony said. "It was just aching at times, at moments throughout the game." Shumpert, who was 6 for 6 on 3s, hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to two points before Chandler hit two free throws to tie it at 100 with 1:02 left. Chandler finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Houston used a big run to start the fourth quarter and erase an eight-point deficit. The teams exchanged leads several times after that, but neither team led by more than a basket in the quarter before Harden scored five straight points to make it 100-95 with 2:23 remaining. Chandler Parsons added 17 points and 11 rebounds for Houston, Dwight Howard had 15 points and Jeremy Lin scored 14 against his former team. The Rockets opened the final period with a 10-1 run to take an 83-82 lead with about nine minutes remaining. Harden scored 11 points, powered by three 3-pointers, in the opening minutes of the second half to stretch Houstons lead to 61-56 with about eight minutes left in the third quarter. Anthony, who scored 45 points against Houston earlier this season, responded after that by making the first four points of an 8-0 run by New York to put the Knicks up 64-61. The game was tied at 66-all when New York scored seven straight to regain the lead 73-66. New York led 81-73 entering the fourth quarter thanks in part to 13 points by Shumpert in the third. The Knicks led by one with about 7 1/2 minutes remaining in the second quarter when Houston used a 10-2 run to take a 39-32 lead. Chandler received a technical foul in that span when he got tangled up with Howard and swung an elbow. Lin then made a nifty reverse layup and the ensuing free throw and Houston capped the run with an alley-oop dunk from Harden to Terrence Jones. New York got going after that, using an 11-2 spurt, with consecutive 3-pointers from Anthony, to regain a 43-41 lead. Parsons made a pair of free throws with seconds left in the second quarter to lead 48-47 at halftime. NOTES: Singer Paul Simon, who will perform with Sting at the Toyota Center in February, attended the game. ... Knicks F Kenyon Martin has a sore left ankle and did not dress for the game. ... Overall, the teams have split their past 20 meetings, with the Maple Leafs winning three in a row and nine of the last 11 played in Toronto. The Leafs are looking for a third straight victory tonight after holding off the Boston Bruins 4-3 on Tuesday. Tyler Bozak scored twice and added an assist, while Jonathan Bernier made 14 of his 38 saves in the third period. James van Riemsdyk had a goal and an assist, Jake Gardiner scored and Phil Kessel tallied three helpers as Toronto has won back-to-back contests following a four-game slide. "Well weve been giving a better effort thats for sure," said Toronto head coach Randy Carlyle. "Weve raised our compete level and were going to have to continue to do that to get points. Thats the most frustrating part for our hockey club has been that we havent been able to achieve that with any consistency. Thats frustrating for the coaching staff, thats for sure." Carlyle is likely to give James Reimer the start in net tonight. He is 1-0-1 against the Sabres this season, allowing five goals on 64 shots faced, and is 6-2-2 against them lifetime with a 3.27 goals against average. The Sabres are just 4-14-2 on the road compared to 9-13-3 at home, but return to Buffalo for three in a row starting on Saturday. Tied at 1-1 going into the third period on Tuesday, the Sabres and Flyers engaged in a back-and-forth frame that featured five goals in total. The last went to Philadelphia as Vincent Lecavalier scored with 14.8 seconds left in regulation. Cody Hodgson, Matt DAgostini and Tyler Ennis tallied for the Sabres, who had been 6-0-2 in their previous eight at home and lost for the fourth time in the last six games overall. Steve Ott chipped in two assists in defeat, while backup Jhonas Enroth stopped 29 shots. It marked the first time that the Sabres scored more than two goals in a game the Enroth had started since Nov. 2 and he fell to 1-9-4 with a 2.57 GAA and .913 save percentage this season. "Hes been our best player when hes played. We just havent gotten him the goals," said DAgostini. Ryan Miller should get the start in net tonight for Buffalo and is 2-0-1 with a 1.95 GAA in three games against Toronto this season. Defenseman Tyler Myers is eligible to return to the Sabres lineup after serving a three-game suspension for a hit to the head of New Jerseys Dainius Zubrus on Jan. 4. Myers has four assists in four games versus the Leafs this season, while Matt Moulson has tallied a pair of goals and two assists. PHILADELPHIA -- Sergei Bobrovsky stuck it to his former team, then gave his stick a few extra shakes in celebration toward the jeering crowd. Back on familiar ice, Bobrovsky made himself quite at home. Bobrovsky stopped 37 shots for his fourth shutout of the season, leading the Columbus Blue Jackets to their first win in Philadelphia, 2-0 over the Flyers on Thursday night. "Its something special," Bobrovsky said. "Its tough to explain." James Wisniewski and Brandon Dubinsky each scored goals for the Blue Jackets, who were 0-5-1 in Philadelphia since the franchises inception in 2000. Led by Bobrovsky, a former Flyer, the Blue Jackets moved closer to clinching their second-ever playoff berth. They closed within two points of the Flyers for third place in the Metropolitan Division. "Were in a good position," Dubinsky said. "Its not like where we were last year when we had to continue to watch and hope and chase teams. Were right where we want to be." The Flyers have lost three straight games and were shut out for the second straight time. They havent scored a goal in 130 minutes, 25 seconds, dating back to a third-period goal on March 30 against Boston. Flyers coach Craig Berube said the offence simply didnt test Bobrovsky enough, especially in the third. "Weve got to do a better job of getting shots through, get rebounds," he said. Wisniewski snapped a scoreless tie with his seventh goal of the season late in the second period. He finished off a Columbus attack that saw at least three shots on Steve Mason before he was able to slide in the puck with 6 seconds left on the power play. Dubinsky appeared to kick in the puck early in the third to make it 2-0. The Blue Jackets are about as automatic as it gets in the NHL with a lead after two periods: They improved to 27-2-4 with a two-period lead. "Were going to keep climbing," Bobrovsky said. The interesting matchup was the one between the pipes: Mason vs. Bobrovsky. Mason had it all figured out in Columbus when he went 33-20-7 with 10 shutouts and won the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year in 2008-09, the only season the Blue Jackets have made the playoffs. But Mason and Columbus could never recapture that fleeting success again. He fell to 20 wins and five shutouts the next season, and bottomed out in 2011-12 with a 16-26-3 mark. Mason lost his job to Bobrovsky, the former Flyer who blossomed into last seasons Vezina Trophy winner. Mason, who had 25 saves, was traded to the Flyers at the end of last season and became the No. 1 goalie after they bought out Ilya Bryzgalovs contract. Bobrovsky was expendable because Bryzgalov signed a nine-year deal and was supposed to anchor the net as Philadelphia chased its first Stanley Cup championship since 1975. Bryzgalovs quirky personality and sometimes brutal honesty with the media didnt always endear him to teammates and he lasted only two seasons. Mason and Bobrovsky are now leading playoff pushes for both organizations. Bobrovsky made 17 saves in the second period and the Blue Jackets defence kept the punchless Flyers out of the zone for most of the third. "We know it means a lot for him to be back here in Philly," Dubinsky said. "When you get traded from a team, it always feels good to go into the building and beat them. He was huge. He gave us an opportunity when we werent at our best in the first." The Flyers need to rediscover their offence over the final games if they want to make any kind of deep post-season run. "I dont think you can start pressing the panic button or anything like that, but we definitely need to get harder, especially in front of their end," forward Scott Hartnell said. NOTES: Flyers D Kimmo Timonen (upper body) returned to the lineup after a one-game absence. ... Bobrovsky has eight career shutouts. ... The Blue Jackets are 3-1 vs. the Flyers this season. ... Mats Zuccarello had no complaints when the puck found its way into the net. Zuccarello broke up a scoreless duel between two Olympic goalies with 5:58 remaining, lifting the Rangers to a 1-0 victory over the Red Wings on Thursday night.SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Javier Morales evened the score in the 36th minute, and the San Jose Earthquakes and Real Salt Lake finished with a 1-1 draw Saturday night. Morales converted from the spot after referee David Gantar ruled Earthquakes defender Jason Hernandez tripped Joao Plata inside the penalty area. The draw gives Real Salt Lake (11-5-10) 43 points and moves them into a second-place tie with the LA Galaxy in the Western Conference.dddddddddddd Sam Cronin opened the scoring for San Jose (6-10-8) in the 14th minute with a left-footed strike into the far-left corner of the goal. Chris Wondolowski assisted Cronin for the goal after a defensive miscue by Real Salt Lake. Wondolowski missed on a crucial scoring opportunity 5 minutes later when Tommy Thompson headed a ball to him for a perfect setup at the top of box. CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Panthers announced theyve signed unrestricted free agent safety Roman Harper from the New Orleans Saints to a two-year contract. Financial terms were not released Tuesday. Harper, 31, is expected to replace starter Mike Mitchell, who signed a free agent contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers earlier this off-season. Harper has been a mainstay at safety in New Orleans for the past eight seasons starting 104 games. He was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2009 and 2010. However, injuries limited him to five games in 2013. The Panthers like to use their safeties to blitz the quarterback and Harper has proven capable of doing just that during his career. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Harper has 17 career sacks, the most by any defensive back since 2006. Hes forced 14 career fumbles. Nacho Fernandez Jersey . ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Eleven days after he was released by the Baltimore Orioles, Steve Pearce was a huge reason they beat Tampa Bay. Pearce hit a two-run homer and made a game-saving defensive play Thursday night in Baltimores 3-1 victory over the Rays. Pearce, who re-signed with the Orioles two days after his April 27 release, hit his second homer in three games. Ubaldo Jimenez (2-4) won his second straight start as Baltimore completed a three-game sweep. The home run by Pearce came off David Price after J.J. Hardys double in the second inning. Playing first base in place of injured slugger Chris Davis, Pearce also made an outstanding stretch to catch a throw from Hardy that completed an inning-ending double play in the fifth. "Stevie may have made the defensive play of the night," Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said. Rays manager Joe Maddon challenged the call, but the ruling that Pearce kept his foot on the bag was confirmed after a 2-minute review. "The bases were loaded at the time, so if that got past me it could have cleared the bases," said Pearce, who had to wait for the replay decision to be sure the call was right. "It happened so fast and when you look, youre not on the bag anymore, so it depends on what happens." Nick Markakis extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a single in the Baltimore third. Evan Longoria hit a two-out RBI single in the first off Jimenez, who pitched 5 1-3 innings for his second win after going 0-4 in his first month with the Orioles. "Im really happy April is gone,," Jimenez said.dddddddddddd. "Now its May and everything is good." Singles by Adam Jones, Pearce and Jonathan Schoop produced Baltimores final run in the fourth. Darren ODay worked the ninth for his second save. The Rays have scored only eight runs in losing five straight games to Baltimore. They left 11 runners on base in this one. "Our goal right now is to figure out a way to get through it," Longoria said. "We all want to win. We all want to do our part. When it doesnt work out, its definitely frustrating." Price (3-3) gave up nine hits and three runs while striking out three in five-plus innings. It was the 16th time in their last 23 games that a Rays starting pitcher has failed to pitch into the sixth inning. Tampa Bay pitching coach Jim Hickey was ejected in the first inning for arguing a checked swing by Jones. VANCOUVER -- Anders Lindback seems to have the Vancouver Canucks number. The young Swede netminder came off the bench Thursday night and played well at Rogers Arena for the second time this season to backstop the Nashville Predators to a 6-5 victory. "I think we realized we had to start playing better for our goaltender," defenceman Shea Weber said after Lindback relieved Pekka Rinne at 10:29 of the second period. He made several key saves to allow the Predators to come back and eventually beat the Canucks on Mike Fishers late goal with 1:16 left in regulation. The Canucks had taken a 5-3 lead on 18 shots, but Lindback shut the door with 19 saves. When he replaced Rinne in Vancouver in a 5-1 Oct. 20 loss, he allowed only one goal on 24 shots. In the third period he gave Nashville a chance to win with a pad save on Cody Hodgson, then denied Keith Ballard on his doorstep and foiled Dan Hamhuiss spin move. "I think the guys did a really good job of letting me handle the first pucks and took away the rebounds" said Lindback who didnt mind another baptism by fire. "Its always nice to get a few (shots) right away. Its a confidence boost, (you) get warm and feel the pucks. I felt good out there." Weber, whose Predators capitalized on all three of their chances on a power play, said they relied too much on their goaltenders while being outshot 37-20. "I think even after (Lindback) came in we were still too loose defensively, but he made some big saves and we had some timely goals," Weber said. Fishers second goal of the night was the most timely. He took Martin Erats pass and backhanded the puck over a sprawling Roberto Luongo with time running out. "They were taking it to us late and we just got one chance and buried it," Fisher said of the only goal of the final period. "In the third period anything can happen and we just found a way." So did Lindback. "Hes a young guy and hes been solid for us," Fisher said. "You dont see a lot of him because of how good Pekka is but when we need him, hes there." It was not a netminders night as the Predators, who lost 1-0 in Calgary on Tuesday, got away from their stifling defensive style. They scored three times on five shots at Canuck backup Cory Schneider, who was making his seventh straight start and riding a five-game win streak with a goals-against average of 0.79. Schneider didnt get charged with the loss as Luongo gave up a two-goal lead. Both Rinne and Luongo were Vezina trophy nominees last season. "We deserved a better fate," said Luongo who started the second period. "It was unfortunate they got that late goal on a pretty good play. "I didnt get much action, obviously, and they scored a couple of nice goals." David Legwand, Weber and Fisher staked Nashville to a 3-1 first-period lead while Jordin Tootoo and Colin Wilson tied the game 5-5 with goals 1:21 apart. Nashville has scored eight power-play goals in its last seven games. Hodgson, Daniel Sedin, Aaron Volpatti, with his first goal in 36 games, Alex Burrows and Jannick Hansen scored for the Canucks, who had two power-play goals. It was an out-of-character game for both clubs. Last season they combined for only 14 goals in four games against each other. The Predators, who had scored only five goals in their previous four games, improved to 12-9-4 with their second win in three games. Vancouver dropped to 14-10-1. Nashville coach Barry Trotz wasnt happy with his club getting into a scorefest with Vancouver. "The positive is Anders was really good and that when things got turned about in the second (period) we were able to find a way to stay with it," Trotz said. Canuck coach Alain Vigneault said the game was fun for the fans but didnt follow his game plan. "It was an entertaining game without a doubt, not the way we had drawn it up," Vigneault said. "I liked everything about our game except for our penalty-killing and obviously both our goaltenders would probably like to have a couple of those back." Notes:@ Members of the Grey Cup champion B.C. Haren didnt go with the Dodgers to Australia for their season-opening, two-game series against Arizona, so he didnt get his first taste of real action with his new team until he threw six strong innings in a 5-1 victory against the San Diego Padres on Wednesday night. "I feel like part of the team now," Haren said. "I havent done anything up to now. Im just happy that I was able to come through for the guys. "I really wasnt with the team that much," said Haren, who signed as a free agent in late November. "Teams often bond on the road. Theyre in the clubhouse a lot, on the plane or bus, whatever. So I really didnt have that. Im just glad I was able to come through, and Im looking forward to getting back home." While the Dodgers were in Arizona, Haren, their No. 4 starter, pitched in minor league games. "Man, I got my butt kicked in those camp games," he said. "The adrenaline level, theres nobody watching, its dead silence. Its hard to simulate major league innings." Haren retired the first nine batters before Everth Cabrera singled to centre leading off the fourth and eventually scored on Yonder Alonsos one-out single to right. The run was unearned because Seth Smith, batting after Cabrera, reached on catchers interference by A.J. Ellis. Haren (1-0) allowed four hits, struck out seven and walked none. The Dodgers took two of three from the Padres and now play their home opener Friday afternoon against San Francisco. The Dodgers jumped on Tyson Ross (0-1) for three runs in the first inning. Carl Crawford doubled to left-centre and advanced on Yasiel Puigs sacrifice bunt. Puig was safe when Ross throw pulled first baseman Alonso off the bag. Manager Bud Black went out to challenge the play, but umpires determined he didnt do so in a timely manner. Hanley Ramirez doubled to left to bring in both runners and then scored on Adrian Gonzalezs single to centre. Ramirez scored again in the fifth when he walked with one out and eventually came in on Andre Ethiers two-out single to right. Ross allowed fourr runs, three earned, in five innings while striking out seven and walking four.dddddddddddd "His stuff was good, he just really couldnt command his fastball early in the game," Black said. "The first two innings, 50-plus pitches. He had to work awfully hard to get those six outs. He had a real tough team getting the ball in the strike zone early. "Haren, on the other hand, was getting the ball in the strike zone early. He was pretty efficient the first three innings." Los Angeles added another run in the eighth against Donn Roach, who was making his big league debut. Roach came on with two outs and allowed singles to Juan Uribe and Ellis, and an RBI double to Dee Gordon. NOTES: The Dodgers put reliever Brian Wilson on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Monday, with inflammation in the ulnar nerve in his right elbow, and recalled right-hander Jose Dominguez from Triple-A Albuquerque. Manager Don Mattingly said Wilson threw Wednesday and will continue building from there. ... Mattingly said OF Matt Kemp (right ankle surgery) is on track to be activated from the disabled list on Friday. ... RHP Josh Beckett (bruised right thumb) is scheduled to pitch for Class-A Rancho Cucamonga on Friday night as he works his way back from the DL. ... The Padres claimed LHP Bobby LaFromboise off waivers from the Seattle Mariners and optioned him to Triple-A El Paso. To make room on the 40-man roster, the club transferred right-hander Joe Wieland from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL. Wieland, still rehabbing from reconstructive elbow surgery, recently had arthroscopic surgery to relieve irritation in the back of his elbow, pushing back his return. Manager Bud Black thinks Wieland can return before the All-Star break. ... Both teams are off Thursday. The Dodgers play their home opener Friday against San Francisco. RHP Ryan Vogelsong is scheduled to make his season debut for the Giants while LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu (1-0) goes for the Dodgers. The Padres are at Miami. NEWARK, N.J. -- The Boston Bruins are not only threatening to run away with the Eastern Conference, they are challenging St. Louis for the NHLs best regular-season record. The Bruins rolled to their 10th straight victory Tuesday night, getting goals from Brad Marchand and Jarome Iginla in a 59-second span early in the second period in beating the slumping New Jersey Devils 4-2. The winning streak ties Anaheim for the NHLs longest this season and it has moved the Bruins (99 points) just two behind the idle Blues in the race for the Presidents Trophy. St. Louis has a game in hand. "Its been good," Bruins coach Claude Julien said after the team posted its third 10-game winning streak since he took over as coach in 2007-08. "Our guys just keep believing and doing the right things," he added. "Thats given us the opportunity to win." The right thing for the Bruins was their response after Patrik Elias scored for New Jersey with a two-man advantage just 29 seconds into the second period. Not only did it tie the game at 1, it happened so fast that the Devils had 1:28 left on the second power play. Instead of sagging while playing their second game in as many nights, the Bruins responded. Marchand scored his league-leading fifth short-handed goal and the red-hot Iginla pushed the lead to two goals less than a minute late. "Its always nice when you are able to get a goal right after they score one, and getting it short-handed is always nice," Marchand said. The winning streak is the Bruins longest since a 10-game run in November 2011. Its also four shy of the franchise record set in 1929-30. "Were not thinking about anything," Marchand said of the record and the run at the Presidents Trophy. "Weve cleared that out of our minds and are trying to take it game by game and day by day. Weve played too many games in too short of a time to think like that. Its just a struggle getting up every day and looking at the next game. Its been a pretty tiring month. "Were staying focused, and if we do that, well continue our run." Patrice Bergeron and Chris Kelly also scored for Boston. Chad Johnson made 20 saves as the Eastern Conference leaders hurt the Devils post-season hopes by sending them to their third straight loss. Bergeron also had the primary assist on Marchands goal while Zdeno Chara, who was celebrating his 37th birthday, made the breakout pass out of the zone. The goal had not been announced when Iginla broke into the Devils zone after taking a long pass and beat Martin Brodeur between the pads with a shot from the right circle. It was his 26th goal of the season and his fifth in the last three games. Elias and Travis Zajac scored for the Devils, who have 13 games left to either turn things around or they will miss the playoffs for the second straight year and third time in four. Brodeur made 27 saves. "Our effort is just not at the right point for the urgency that we need to make that push toward the playoffs," Brodeur said. The fans at the Prudential Center noted that by booing New Jersey as it left the ice down 3-1 after two periods. "We deserved to get booed," said Elias, whose goal was his 16th. Kelly stretched the lead to 4-1 a little more than seven minutes into the third period, beating Brodeur in close after taking a pass from Carl Soderberg. Zajac snapped a shot over Johnson (15-3-1) a little more than two minutes later. It was his 13th of the season. The Bruins, who were playing on consecutive nights, dominated the first period, taking the first nine shots. Bergeron put them ahead with 5:27 left in the period when he was sent in alone by Reilly Smith and beat Brodeur with a backhander that seemed to slip off his stick. NOTES: Bruins D Johnny Boychuk missed his second straight game with a leg injury. ... Devils F Ryan Carter missed his second straight with an upper-body injury. New Jersey recalled Tim Sestito from Albany (AHL) to take his place on the fourth line. ... The Bruins had killed off 20 straight penalties before Elias scored with 6 seconds left in the two-man advantage. ... Iginlas goal was the 556th of his career, tying him with Bruins great John Bucyk for 25th place in NHL history. ... Devils F Jaromir Jagr picked up an assist on Zajacs goal, the 1,044th of his career, five behind Gordie Howe for eighth in league history. Abdul-Jabbar Swingman Jersey . After three-time reigning mens titlist Novak Djokovic lost here on Tuesday, fifth-seeded Pole Agnieszka Radwanska took down two-time defending champion Victoria Azarenka 6-1, 5-7, 6-0 on Wednesday to set up a semifinal match with Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia. "Im so happy and pleased, especially that I beat one of the best players in the world," Radwanska said. "Was not easy draw, not easy quarterfinal. Im very happy that I made my first semifinal here." The second-seeded Azarenkas 18-match winning streak in Melbourne came to a halt on Day 10. She was trying to become the first woman to win the singles title here in three consecutive years, or since Martina Hingis turned the trick from 1997-99. Radwanska, who ended a streak of three consecutive quarterfinal defeats at the Aussie Open, committed just 15 unforced errors compared to 47 for Azarenka. "She was aggressive. She was making everything. She was guessing right. I was just playing a little bit too predictive, you know," Azarenka said. Azarenka had been a dominant 12-3 lifetime against her fellow 24-year-old Radwanska, including a come-from-behind Aussie quarterfinal victory two years ago. Meannwhile, the 20th-seeded Cibulkova cruised past 11th-seeded Romanian Simona Halep 6-3, 6-0 in a match that lasted just 60 minutes to secure her spot in the final four.dddddddddddd The 24-year-old Cibulkova, who stunned No. 3 seed Maria Sharapova in the fourth round on Monday, is the first woman from Slovakia to reach the Aussie Open semis since Daniela Hantuchova in 2008. The diminutive Cibulkova improved to 2-3 in quarterfinal matches at Grand Slams, with her other win coming at the 2009 French Open. "That time I was 19 years old. I was pretty young. I would say also a different player. You know, I am much more experienced," Cibulkova said. Halep, who upended former world No. 1 Jelena Jankovic in the fourth round, appeared overwhelmed in her Grand Slam quarterfinal debut. "No, just I couldnt play today. I had emotions, big emotions, and I couldnt manage this," she said. "Before the match I was very nervous and I didnt feel the ball at all. I couldnt move my body and I couldnt play." Fourth-seeded Chinese star Li Na and 30th-seeded blossoming 19-year- old Canadian Eugenie Bouchard will meet in the other semifinal on Thursday. The former French Open champion Li is a two-time runner-up at Melbourne Park, including last year against Azarenka.
